Cheadle Lower Mill, often called Cheadle Bleachworks, and now re-named, The Bleachworks, is a former mill in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, England (grid reference SJ854890). A mill has been on the site since the 12th Century[1], originally used as a water powered corn mill. It was later converted to chemical plant, owned by Thor Chemicals, and produced chlorine bleaching agents for use in the dye industry in Manchester at the time. It closed down in 1993 and was left derelict until 2008 when JCS Homes demolished part of the complex prior to their development of the site into housing.

[edit] Location
The works was located to the left of the sliproad where the M60 Clockwise meets the Kingsway Southbound. The chimney (part of the apartment complex) is visible, but most of the buildings were hidden by overgrowth.
[edit] Special Significance
Until recently, the old chemical factory ruins were used as a stage-ground for practising Parkour and the large-scale graffiti has been featured in many forums as an example of urban 'art'.[2]
[edit] Housing
In spite of demonstrations from enthusiasts, in April 2008, a site conversion by Hamptons International to apartments was completed.[3] The old buildings were demolished but the large chimney remains as part of the new housing complex.
