Polythiazyl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Polythiazyl (or Polysulfur nitride), created in 1974, was the first conducting inorganic polymer. In addition to being an electrical conductor, it was also found to be a superconductor at very low temperatures (0.2 K).

Polythiazyl is synthesized from tetrasulfur tetranitride (S4N4) in the following way:

S4N4 + 8Ag → Ag2S + 2N2
S4N4 (w/ Ag2S catalyst) → 2S2N2 (w/ 77K cold finger) → S2N2
S2N2 (@ 0°C, sublimes to surface) → thermal polymerization → (SN)x
