Poltair School is a specialist Sports College, which has been awarded some of the top awards for sport, art, and technology. Its music department is another notable part of the school, with 3 members of St Austell based band The Replicas rising through the ranks (the other member is from Penrice Community College, which is commonly thought as Poltair's main competitor).
Poltair School is unique, in that it is currently the only secondary school in Cornwall to boast a full student radio station, Inferno Radio. Bodmin Community College also has one, but that hasn't been launched yet.
It has educational links with schools in Dithmarschen, Germany, notably the Gymnasium Heide-Ost.
Currently, the school is undergoing a £5 million redevelopment programme, as the oldest blocks (east and west) date back to 1907, and are unsuitable for learning.
The headteacher until July 2007, Heather McIlroy, increased the schools GCSE pass rate by 16% in 2 years, and because of this she has left her post and is now headteacher at the The Mountbatten School And Language College in Romsey, Hampshire. Currently, Sean Hewitt is acting as Headteacher, and is set to be replaced by Stephen Tong in April 2008.
In 2007, Poltair School held its Centenary, which included guided tours of the school, a service at St Johns Methodist Church, and celebrations at St Austell's Eden Project.
