The I-3 (I = Istrebitel or fighter) was a single-seat unequal span biplane fighter mainly of wood construction. The prototype was powered by a 730hp (544kW) BMW VI engine and first flew on the 4 May 1927. The aircraft performed well and series production was authorised with the aircraft powered by a M-17B engine which was derived from the BMW VI. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1929 and about 400 were built.
