Polaris (ship)

Polaris a wood-hulled, 387 ton, schooner screw tug, formerly known as the USS Periwinkle and the USS America.
It first saw duty on Chesapeake Bay and the Rappahannock River with the U.S. Navy. She was laid up at the Norfolk Navy Yard from 1867 to 1870, when the Navy renamed her Polaris (for the Polaris) and loaned her to Charles Francis Hall's North Polar Expedition.
