POV Rampant
several, several articles are out there with POV like "this pokemon is favored" or "a (any adjective) moveset would be..." and other ridiculous things that should NOT be included in an encyclopeadic (sp) entry on a particular pokemon, that kind of stuff is best left for forums and serebii.net. i think we really need to make a concentrated effort on all the articles to remove POV statements, helping to elevate the project as a whole. is anyone else in favor of this? we could start a new section on the project page listing the NPOV pages and those that still need to be changed (for those uncomfortable with making edits). i'm willing to go ahead an start, but the project is daunting and i'd like to make sure others out there are interested in this too. Zappernapper 20:54, 9 July 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed the statements you made at Talk:Umbreon, and I'll use that article and your arguments as examples. I think there's a flaw in your reasoning. However, I could be wrong; somebody else should correct me if I am. Whichever way, I think it's great that you read about Wikipedia's policies; many new editors don't do that.
- According to the official WP:NPOV policy, the NPOV is "not the absence or elimination of viewpoints". In the example you presented at Umbreon, both a positive and a negative statement about Umbreon's use in battle were presented, which creates balance and presents both viewpoints as objectively as possible. The NPOV policy continues by saying that "Background is provided on who believes what and why, and which view is more popular." Therefore, it is also alright to say how popular Umbreon is among trainers.
- In conclusion, the article is allowed to say whether people think Umbreon is great for battle or not, but it's not allowed to simply say whether the article thinks Umbreon should be used in battle. PCEevee talk 01:48, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

- perhaps more what i'm quibbling over isn't so much whether or not the articles are allowed to discuss popularity of a pokemon among players, but rather the way it's being discussed. To quote from Umbreon itself, "Umbreon is perhaps the most un-used of the Eeveelutions... due to the fact it can't learn any powerful Dark-type moves such as Crunch, players preferring...." a statement like this is pure specualation without any reference given to even an internet poll on a heavily used fan-site, adding "perhaps" is just weasely. Opinion and speculation are not suitable in an encyclopedia. maybe removing that specific statement entirely (unless it can be backed by some factual data) and then reworking the sentence that later comes up discussing Umbreon's strengths to include its weaknesses as well. Like -
- Umbreon's movepool works in tandem with his above average defenses, including moves like confuse ray, mean look, snatch, and moonlight. This of course means that he doesn't learn very many strong attacks, namely crunch, because of his low special and physical attack stats. Other alternatives for more "aggressive" movesets would be Houndoom or Tyranitar.
- It's kinda wordy and not the best written but i think you get my point. Also we need to remember that not everyone is always up on the lingo, so using jargon like "tank" and "annoyer" should be avoided unless it's briefly explained. Or better yet, linked to a page detailing what this terminology means.

Well, anything that is written needs to be cited, and by a verifable source. The qeustion now is - is it too crufty? Does the average user care if Umbreon is a great tank, or if "McIceGar" or "SkarmBliss" are commonly-used combos? Hell, I play the games, but would never have known what they were unless I was using NetBattle or played competitively. So even casual Pokémon players may not quite know what's being said in the articles. And if they don't know, the average reader certainly wouldn't know, and thus I agree with the topic creator that they should go, but only because it's too crufty. Hbdragon88 05:05, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you... I think we need to make a concerted effort to remove references to battle strategies. While it may be appropriate to say Umbreon has high defenses, it's 'not' to go on about how one might exploit those strengths. There is no published work out there detailing the strategies of Pokemon, so until there is (therefore citable), it's fan based stuff better left for serebii and bulbapedia. Removing these things might leave many articles looking skeletal but then hopefully it will encourage more people to add quality information. (Perhaps anime and pokedex references to Umbreon's moonlight which technically would be its sig move.)

Possible Article Style Error
It has recently been brought to my attention that it is one of the article style guidelines to put "the" before the name of the Pokemon in the beginning, as if the Pokemon were a species. However, after reading another user's comment concerning the subject, I noticed that the aforementioned use of "the" does not persist in the rest of the article. This inconsistency is a blatant grammar error, as it violates the grammatical status of the word. In the Anime, Bulbasaur, for example, is always referred to as just Bulbasaur as if it were his first name, making the word a proper noun, as opposed to a regular noun, and one of the basic grammar rules is that a proper noun is never preceded by "the". The names of the Pokemon are not nouns but proper nouns, names, and therefore should not be preceded by "the". I say Remove the "the"s. What do you think? --Lividore 17:54, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
- It does. An anon who has no clue about pluralization doesn't know enough about it. Highway Batman! 18:00, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- Are you saying that it's ok to write an article about a species of creatures and then refer to the name of the creature in the article as if it were its first name? You don't refer to "Michael" as "the Michael" and you don't refer to "the cow" as just "cow" either. You've got to pick a way and stick with it. Either it's a proper or a regular noun. --Lividore 18:05, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- No it's both. It's been well discussed, but a Pokémon article is split in two parts. The first part (intro to the bottom of video games) discusse the species, ie - all of the members of the species, anime and manga are discussing individual members of the species, they're name just happens to be the name of species. Like a sheep called sheep. Trading Card Game is general relation since they're bits of paper, but that's mainly as a species, unless it's "Someone's Pokémon", which is an individual. - I agree with everyone else, i've never heard "THE" before any Pokémon, its never in the video games or the anime, so explain where you've heard "THE" before the name, cheers M inun (Spiderman) 10:28, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
- Exerpt from Labrador Retriever: "The Labrador Retriever ("Labrador" or "Lab" for short), is one of several kinds of retriever..." and further on. The article clearly defines the Labrador as a species from that, and further on, it actually is logical to no longer say "the" and everything. Also, as HighwayCello claims, there is a specific claim to the name of the Pokémon and a difference with the species of one. Often, it can be shortened reference. --Tetsuya-san (talk : contribs) 12:30, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm having a serious problem with this Pokemon AFD stuff
It seems every other week somebody lists an article that's pokemon related to AFD.
Look, I can see the limited cases where AFD is useful, but this is getting really ridiculous.
This is interesting bloody information, here! (for the most part, at least) That one question mark glitches in pokemon article, its contents I never heard indepth before, it was a great read. So you can imagine my annoyance when people spontaneously go HEY LET'S DELETE IT because it's nonnotable cruft! (I'm thinking of a few people..)
And then people go all, snort snort snort, pokecruft pokecruft pokecruft, it's totally unbearable. I can honestly say nothing makes me more miffed on wikipedia than this whole process. Even when the source material really isn't that crufty to begin with, it could always be merged into a related article to make the material even better. One of my wiki philosiphies is that most information has a place on wikipedia, even if it's not on its own page. Otherwise it's just not really complete.
So what the hell is the deal? Is this kind of subject a target? Toastypk 07:11, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- It was wholly unsourced, extremely-narrow-interest trivia. It didn't belong here, and it didn't belong merged because, when I looked at the history, the meaning of the article kept changing depending on which anon had edited it last.
- I was actually merging those glitch articles instead of having them deleted, but when there's nothing sourcable there's nothing keepable. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 07:16, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- What if I were to find a similar article online that detailed the glitches? Would that be sourcable? Toastypk 18:35, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
Meh, I feel kind of violated...it's nothing personal, though. But I did spend a fair amount of time cleaning them up, trying to wikify and reformat them, and they were all deleted. My work with them included creating the Template:Pokémon glitches navbox for easier navigation. Now that three pages (cloning, question mark glitches, and bad eggs) have been deleted, the navbox is getting far less useful...I'm leaning more towards using "See also" to point to other glitches. This project breaks rules.
According to policy and this guy. I don't want to be rude and please don't take this is gnawing the newbies or assuming ill intentions of an editor. I don't, it's not the editor, it's the culture. But there has been a pervasive explosion of these character articles in Anime articles. They contain little chunks of information, but only seem to exist to hold an image and an infobox on the character and to fill out a character navagation template... I have half a mind to say delete the lot of them and start from scratch .. but I'd only push for that if we could throw in the similarly formatted character articles from OMG, IY, and Tenchi as well. They were all created in the same manner, and it's not well suited to the wikipedia. First off, they contain way too many pictures and (some of them) seem to only exist because an infobox was able to be created for the article. But, I will not be mean to the information and I will push for a SUPER speedy merge These articles fall under the auspices of the WP:FICTION which give a wonderful steps on how to create such pages. Also, a aticle like Eclair and Lumiere (Kiddy Grade) contains WAY too many photos and is a definite violation of the fair use policy. It needs a lot of trimming regardless of the outcome of this debate. I would vote to Delete the Kiddy Grade Infobox and navigation templates, if I could.
There is a debate going on on wether or not to delete the character pages of Kiddy Grade here. If this is allowed to happen all the various separate pokemon articles on all the separate pokemon and all the supposed useless pages that are too descriptive of pokemon should be deleted. Why? because some admins feel that "We do not need articles on all these characters." Nice isnt it? Anyway this is just a small collective list from just some anime (pokemon and dragonball mostly) of articles that correspond under this decree for deletion as fancruft, non-notability, uselessness and space-wasting...

New Deoxys Form
I put this on the Deoxys talk page as well, but I'm not sure how many people read that page, so I'm mentioning it here too. When looking up info on Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, I came across an add showcasing new Diamond and Pearl colors for the DS Lite. Down in the bottom left of the picture I found is, without a doubt, a shadow of a new fifth Deoxys form. See for yourselves here [1]. I believe that this should be mentioned in the main article about Deoxys. -SaturnYoshi 06:13, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- It be a hoax, yar. Go to the bottom of the page, here [2]. It's right above the Kingler post. Ryūlóng 06:17, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Interesting... Well, at least I didn't add it first. But how can they be so sure it's a fake? I'd like to see these many different scans that the picture was made from. -SaturnYoshi 06:21, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, Serebii.net is always on top of the hoaxes and fake pokémon, and why exactly would Nintendo make new versions of Deoxys in a game where it won't be available until trading, anyway? They're not bringing Deoxys back for Diamond and Pearl; if anything when Deoxys is traded, it'll be the Ruby/Sapphire formation. Ryūlóng 06:25, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- True. But until FireRed and LeafGreen came out, no one really knew that Ruby and Sapphire contained information on all Pokémon, not just those in the game. -SaturnYoshi 06:31, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- And unless someone finds a new Deoxys (or two), I think any information about such should not be utilized until someone goes through the game files and rips. Ryūlóng 06:33, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
- Well, that's beyond my capabilities. I'll leave well enough alone and trust in Serebii.net's judgement. -SaturnYoshi 06:43, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

- I'm aware there's a topics section of the main pokemon portal page, like i said, i took a good part of it for use in my sample portal. Maybe portal is the wrong word... I'm just trying to create something so that people who have read the article can navigate within the pokemon related pages easier. Take a look at Buffy the Vampire Slayer. - Navbox? Like Template:Pokémon locations and Template:Pokémon anime characters? Well, that's an idea. But first, move that thing to your userspace and work on it, you can't put that up as a portal. - If Zappernapper copies it to his userspace, he can use {{db-user}}. However, if he moves the thing, it won't be in the portal space, and we can move it into the template space once it's done. Cheers, Highway Return to Oz... 13:52, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

- I just want the portal deleted, not the idea, which is why I want Zappernapper to put that into his userspace. But if it's actually moved, it'll still leave a redirect to the subpage, which is undesirable. Thoughts? --The Raven's Apprentice (Talk|Contribs) 14:03, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Pokémon glitches
I finally merged Missingno. and 'M into Pokémon glitches, deleting a great deal of dubiously-sourced original research and unencyclopedic detail in the process. This is per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/'M as well as the fact that those articles were in desperate need of cleanup.
Latitude0116 (talk · contribs) has been reinserting info sourced only to TRsRockin, a fansite I've never heard of before this merge. I'd appreciate it if someone could either look in and tell me I'm insane, offer a better source (as that's currently the most reliable source in the article), or ask Latitude to stop inserting OR and cruft. - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 09:12, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
- TRsRockin is, as far as I know, the most comphrensive glitch site for Pokémon on the internet, made up of overview guides from various posters for the website. As far as I know, everything checks out quite well on the information they give, but it is still a fan site. However, it may be the best thing we have, until Serebii gets a glitch section. The pink
The only reason we still use pink in our templates is because we inherited it from Wikipedia:Pokédex, the predecessor to the predecessor to this project. There's no reason we couldn't use some other (low-key! nothing like the Digimon project's awful safety orange) color.
Does anyone really want to change it? - A Man In Bl♟ck (conspire | past ops) 14:55, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

- We had a vote relatively a month ago, can we stop dredging this up? The pink is fine as it is, we use it uniformly, and it's pretty distinctive for us. Highway Return to Oz... 15:10, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

and my user page uses a template style that is colour-heavy. TrackerTV (CW|Castform|Green Valley) 18:24, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
I also have a link to a page (here) that gives you a whole bunch of Pantone colors and gives you a hex equivalent. If you want, copy the NavHide code from the LAT TV template above, paste in a hex code from the site, add the content, and your colour is changed. Simple? It's the power of templates. Reliability of Serebii?
I happened to take a quick glance at Charizard and found lots of citations to Serebii (specifically regarding the anime portion) - but does Serebii fall under WP:RS? When I used to play Pokemon (last summer) and used the GameFAQs message boards, Serebii was the joke - lots of dubious information. I remember one instance where they claimed that Pokémon that had an Exp. Share would get doubled EVs if the Pokémon who battled was holding a Macho Brace. Ended up being false. Beyond that, though, Pokémon.com doesn't have an episode guide? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hbdragon88 (talk • contribs)
- I can't see why we can't rely more on Pokémon.com. I checked their site and they do have brief summaries of the anime episodes. It just seems that everyone holds Serebii in high regard. But the bottom line is, the creator of Serebii doesn't work for Nintendo or have any real affiliation with the creators of Pokémon. --SaturnYoshi 08:46, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Pokémon.com doesn't do manga, and they're epsiode guides are about 5 lines long at most. It's also a flash site, which doesn't help. Serebii is reliable. Highway Return to Oz... 08:55, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- The reliability of Serebii is hardly the open and shut case you make it seem. I realise I'm a biased source, being not only webmaster of Bulbagarden (and it's Bulbapedia), and a former Admin on Serebii (Joe "Serebii" Merrick's right hand man back in 2002), but it is still fairly obvious that, although Serebii is amazingly popular, and has a large membership base on his forums, the serious players of the video games (centered mainly around Smogon now) and the TCG (PokéGym) consider Serebii.net and its general membership a joke. Pretty much every other major Pokémon site considers the general membership of Serebii to consist of mainly the more immature fans, to be perfectly honest.
- Certainly though, very general information, or very widespread information, such as PokéDex info, found on Serebii, will probably be accurate. Their Dex is apparently based on that of Meowth356's old website, Pokémon Forever. Other info though...well, one generally takes that with a grain of salt, until other sites have picked up on it also. While they are generally fairly accurate, the devil is always in the details.
- It's worth mentioning also that Joe has stated on a number of occasions that he's introduced errors into his site on purpose, as a way of catching out people who would "steal" his information.

- Well, let's all hope that at least the anime and manga information is correct, as that's the majority of info being sourced from Serebii. --SaturnYoshi 22:09, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

What are we going to do about Vandalism?
Crossopsted from Pokémon —Minun Spiderman • Review Me 10:48, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
Alright, instead of posting this on all 500 Pokemon articles (that should be about right, right? Because 403 Pokemon, then a bunch of assorted articles...;)) I decided I'd post it here, at the heart of Wikipedia's Pokemon articles. As many of us know, a four year old chimpanzee has been vandalising many of the Pokemon articles. There seems to be no way of stopping this other than locking every article, which would be stupid. Any suggestions? ShadowUltra 19:33, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
- The vandal, who if he wasn't on an AOL connection would have been fried by Raul by now according to him, is repeatedly vandalizing templates that appear in all the creature articles, causing a giant *coughs* to appear in every single Pokémon page, and in the case of Friday, the Main Page. The way to fix this problem is to protect the said templates from new accounts editing them, and to block all editors who do this to the templates. At present, accounts need to be at least 4 days old to bypass protection, so this will slow him considerably. Cheers, Highway Return to Oz... 19:40, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- Now there's an idea that should have been thought up earlier! Realistically, all templates should be protected because they're more mechanical than the articles themselves, which are more content-based, and while any IP address can give potentially good edits to the content of articles, only the more experienced Wikipedians should tinker with the templates. By the way, when it comes to the content of the vandalism in question, I suspect an ulterior motive in calling the culprit a 4-year-old-chimp. ^_^ Erik the Appreciator 01:39, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
-
- Great idea, I support this all the way! WikiSlasher 11:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- It is a risky decision, some templates such as Template:Pokémon species are awfully complicated, while others, like Template:Pokenum, thrives on new users. I think we should discuss at the project talk page, because it is a risky decision. Highway Return to Oz... 11:41, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Collaberating Various Information
As a large, time consuming project, I believe nearly all the Pokémon entires could use some help in maintaining a constant rhythem, if you will. Possibly, we should come up with a fairly standard way of maintaining the information given among the "Biology", "Video Game", and "Anime" categories in the Pokémon articles. For example, evolution levels, as I've seen, can be found in the intorduction of the article, or in the "Video Game" section, but this always differs from article to article.
A lot of the information can be found in different categories and commonly differes from article to article. Perhaps we should come up with a set of "invisible rules" that can help the members of the PCP keep information more organized.
Compare Altaria to Zubat, as you can see evolution level is found in the "video game" section for Altaria and in the intrduction for Zubat. To make information navigating easier for users who want information quick, perhaps making a information distribution list could be concocted. (i.e. All evolution information should be placed under "In the video game"; All Pokédex related information (including number and information from the entry) should be included in the Introduction)
Realizing anyone can edit the entries, it would be the PCP's responsibility to inform other users on how the articles should be written (for flow and coherency purposes), should it be decided said information will have a precise place.
Yes, no, maybe so (questions?)? Enigmatic timbre0x 05:31, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sounds good and makes sense. But how would "invisible rules" work? If they are invisible no one can see them >_>. Alvin6226 talk 15:56, 14 August 2006 (UTC)
