Podocarpus macrophyllus's standard Japanese name is "INUMAKI". "INU" means dog. When it is used for plant name, it always means "useless". "MAKI" means some kind of conifer.
The name "KUSAMAKI" is sometimes used, in daily life. "KUSA" means grass, so "KUSAMAKI" means "conifer with grass-like leaves".
