This article is disappointing. I was hoping to find an actual list of radio stations that podcast, not a history of radio stations podcasting. Can we have a list here? I'll start it. --Clyde 4 July 2005 15:02 (UTC)

[edit] Radio Station List or 'Firsts'?

Sorry you're disappointed, Clyde...

I think Wikipedia generally discourages index pages full of links. It's easy to see how they'd get out of hand, and there are various "directory" pages elsewhere on the Web. (See http://www.publicradiofan.com/podcasts.html for a start, or just Google the words "podcast" and "directory")

This page started as a paragraph in the "history" section of podcasting and was moved here last month. I've continued to try to document "firsts" and date the early adopters, confirming some of the dates by e-mailing stations I knew got in early, because I was listening at the time (WGBH and KOMO).

But I'm not enough of a Wikipedian to know how to change the official heading or status of the page to "radio podcast 'firsts'" or make it more comprehensive.

For example, I'd like to learn which college stations really were the first -- someone added a link to one college station, but no documentation about when it went online, etc.

Meanwhile, someone has resumed putting radio podcasts in the main page's "history" section, which I assume someone with more time (or "authority") here will resolve in due time. BobStepno 5 July 2005 16:43 (UTC)

[edit] Page move & content criteria

OK, so should we go with "Podcasting and traditional broadcasters", "History of podcasting by traditional broadcasters" or something else? Joe D (t) 7 July 2005 22:00 (UTC) P.S., this article should avoid being an article about "firsts"--it would be like an article on the History of the UK that mentioned only the acts of union, or the united states that mentioned only the declaration of independence.

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Thanks for the name change. You're right -- "firsts" can't be the only point, and I didn't mean to imply that. But I think there needs to be some reason for an entry -- some innovation or significance -- to keep the WikiPowersThatBe from deleting the page as a mere "directory."
"Firsts" of various kinds and "early adopters" are relatively easy forms of significance to choose and document. The BBC's decision to dramatically expand its podcast test is another good choice, and may be worth having both here and on the main Podcasting page.
(How much duplication there should be between the two pages is another question. Someone apparently created this separate page when the country-by-country list started growing.)
In any case, I suspect that the page should avoid listing programs or stations without giving a reason. Based on the vote to delete a general "directory of podcasts" page a few weeks ago, I'm assuming this page should avoid trying to be a comprehensive "directory of broadcaster podcasts."
