The Podil or Podilskyi Raion (Ukrainian: Поділ, Подільський район, translit. Podil, Podils’kyi Raion) is a historic neighbourhood and an administrative raion (district) in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. It is one of the oldest neighborhoods of Kiev, the birthplace of the city's trade, commerce and industry. It still contains many architectural and historical landmarks, and new archeological sites are still being revealed.

Numerous attractions of Podil particularly include: Frolivskyi and Pokrovskyi Monasteries, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, House of Ivan Mazepa, House of Peter the Great, Fountain of Samson, Zamkova Hora hill, Andriyivskyy Descent — the main link of Podil to the city's administrative Uppertown, Borychiv Descent, Kiev River Port, main port on the Dnieper, Kiev funicular, Poshtova Square, and the Kontraktova Square.

[edit] Administrative Podil

The Podilskyi Raion, as an administrative entity, was formed in 1921 on one of the largest historical neighborhoods in Kiev. In May of 2001, Podil celebrated its 80th anniversery of its foundation. Within the raion include the: Vynohradar, Kurenyovka, a part of Nyvky, Rybalskyi Island, Mostytskyi, and the Podil residential neighoborhood (masyv) itself.

On the territory of the Podilskyi Raion lie about 50 industrial organizations, some of which are world renowned: Kiev Factory of Champagne Wines, Stolichnyi, Beer factory at Podil, Kiev Vitamin Factory, and the Farmak Factory.
