Podcasting in India

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Podcasting in India is at a very nascent stage, despite the fact that a large number of people blog from the nation. Many of the current Indian podcasts seem to cater to the NRI community as podcasting inside India is still not very popular due to bandwidth constraints[1]. There are approximately 3000 Indian podcasters around[2], including celebrities like former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who hosts a cricket podcast at Yahoo India.

Some of the earliest podcasters in India include Podmasti, Indicast, PodioIndia, Kamla Bhatt show and Kiruba Show, a spin-off from the US based Podtech[3]. Podcasting in Hinglish and Indian languages is also gaining ground, example of such podcasts are Podmasti, Podbharti and Sanjay. Podbazaar also hosts podcasts in various Indian languages, predominantly in Tamil.

In June 2007 a group of Podcast enthusiasts organized Podworks at Chennai, a 2 day workshop devoted solely to Podcasting[4].
