Pocahontas Stakes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pocahontas Stakes is a Grade III race held every year at Louisville, Kentucky's Churchill Downs fall meet. Open only to two-year-old Thoroughbred fillies, it's set at a distance of one mile (eight furlongs) on the dirt, and offers a purse of $100,000.
Run in honor, perhaps, of both Pocahontas, the Indian maiden, as well as Pocahontas, the daughter of Glencoe. Pocahontas (1837-1870) was one of England’s greatest "blue hen" mares, producing, in particular, three sons who influenced the breed enormously: Stockwell, Rataplan, and King Tom.
The Pocahontas will be in its 38th running in 2008.
