Po' Girl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Po' Girl is a Canadian acoustic group whose style derives from jazz, folk, and country with a tinge of punk attitude. The style of music they perform is sometimes referred to as Alt-country but today more commonly called Americana. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, the band consists of Allison Russell (vocals), Awna Teixeira (multi-instrumental), Diona Davies (violin) and Benny Sidelinger. Po' Girl released their self-titled debut album in 2003. Po' Girl's music has been compared with those of Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, and Norah Jones; and it showcases melodies from instruments as diverse as banjo, clarinet, harmonica, and mandolin.

In 2004, Po' Girl recorded and released their second album, Vagabond Lullabies, with the help of friend musicians who included Roey Shemesh on bass and John Raham and Shelley Okepnak on drums.

Allison Russell is also a founding member of the duo Salt (later renamed,"Sofia"). Former member Trish Klein is also a founding member of Be Good Tanyas, another folky Canadian band.
