Poás Canton

Poás is the name of the eighth canton in the province of Alajuela in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 73.84 km²[1], and has a population of 26,476[2]. The capital city of the canton is San Pedro.
The elongated canton sits among the ridges and valleys on the southern slope of Poás Volcano. The Río Poás and Río Poasito form its eastern border, while the Río Prendes and Río Tacares limit the canton to the west. Poás Volcano is the canton's northernmost point.
The canton of Poás is subdivided into 5 distritos (districts).

The canton was established by a decree of October 15, 1901. It was named for Poás Volcano.
