PMJS (also known as "PMJS: Premodern Japanese Studies") is an interdisciplinary, online forum dedicaded to the exchange of knowledge on earlier periods of Japanese art, culture, history, religion, language and literature. It was founded in 1999 by Michael Watson of Meijigakuin University in Yokohama, Japan and is currently edited by Matthew Stavros of the University of Sydney. PMJS’s main function is to facilitate serious academic discussion on topics related to premodern Japan. It also serves to disseminate information on field-related publications, conferences, workshops, and jobs.
With over 600 members worldwide, PMJS is one of the largest forums dedicated specifically to premodern Japanese Studies. Most PMJS members are scholars and advanced graduate students working in the fields of early Japanese art, art history, literature, history, culture, language, and religion. The forum, however, is open to anyone with serious interest in premodern Japan.
In January 2008, the format of PMJS changed dramatically with the forum's migration to Google Groups. Until then, it had functioned strictly as an electronic mailing list or "listserv". With the transition to Google Groups, however, PMJS became a fully searchable and linkable database of virtual academic discussions. There are plans for the site to expand over time to include related book reviews, mini academic articles, and other field-specific resources.
