Plura (river in Norway)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plura is a river in Rana municipality, county of Nordland, Norway. The river has its outlet in Kallvatnet, flows through the valley of Plurdalen and ends up as a tributary to Ranelva 10 km north of Mo i Rana.
The name is connected with the Norwegian verb «prula» − meaning «boiling» and «seething».
Plura flows both over and beneath the ground, and has the longest subterranean flow in Norway (3,8 km). The river is rich on salmon, trout and arctic char.
Until 1964, Plura was a large river, washing limestone out of the mountain, creating several caves downwards the valley of Plurdalen. Through the cave Pluragrotta, 20,000 cubic metre of water passed each minute. The dam of Kallvatnet made Plura almost dry, and the water in the cave of Pluragrotta became standing still like in a «water seal».
