Pluck Me

A common nickname for The company store in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The name is a derogratory name for stores owned by the local coal company. The stores, owned by the company would extend lines of credit to miners, the miners in turn would have to buy all of the groceries, and non perishable items from the company store. The catch was that very often the supplies necessary to survive and the pay issued to the miners did not match up in the miners favour. This led to men working for the "company store" while steadily growing deeper and deeper in debt.
