Clyde Tombaugh must've had really good eye-sight or really looked these plates over. I could've never discovered planet Pluto if I was the first to look at these plates!

He used a "blink comparator" which basically flips between the two plates rapidly, so that any differences between them will stand out. The stars are in the same place on each plate, so if you rapidly swap between the two images, the tiny moving dot of Pluto will stand out much more readily.
