Purpose of use

Use of a logo in an article helps keep the article distinct from other articles that may have similar names. Graphical cues stimulate different parts of the brain than pure cognition used when reading text; the more complete the set of sensory input associated with a memory, the more effectively it will be retained. Until we can add force feedback and smell-o-vision to Wikipedia articles, inclusion of graphical elements will have to do.

Replaceable?

No special copyright information for this image is expressed on the web site from which it originated. The software package with which it is associated is licensed under the GPL, but the image is not included with the software itself, since the software does not include a graphical user interface. As well, this is a low resolution image, and thus not suitable for production of counterfeit goods, the logo is not used in such a way that a reader would be confused into believing that the article is written or authorized by the owner of the logo.
