"Please Help the Cause Against Loneliness" is a song by British singer Sandie Shaw and the first single from her 1988 album Hello Angel. Having released a string of hit singles in the 1960s, Shaw had semi-retired from public life in the early 1970s and had released only a few records with minimal publicity since. It was not until 1983 when she received a letter from Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths persuading her to make a comeback that she finally scored a Top 30 with her cover of their song "Hand in Glove." At the time an album was discussed with their label (Rough Trade Records) but this had to be postponed due to Shaw falling pregnant. By 1988 she had released two further singles with Polydor but due to various complications had not made an album with them, and finally got to make her album in 1988 with the Rough Trade label. "Please Help the Cause Against Loneliness" was the first single to be released from the album and was written by Morrissey and producer Stephen Street. Morrissey also recorded a demo for his first original album, though this has never been released.(but can be found online) Shaw has stated that this is one of her favourite songs.
