Not all the text below is correct, but I'm too lazy to fix it - see w:Pleasant Street Incline for the real deal.

Looking south on the Tremont Street Subway in Boston, towards the Pleasant Street Incline. The tracks to the left went to the surface, while those to the right served the Washington Street Elevated from June 1901 until November 1908, when the Washington Street Tunnel was finished. The elevated connection was between Porter and Kirkland Streets (running southwest), then curved south and east over the Boston and Albany Railroad and over Castle Street, junctioning the Washington Street Elevated with the Atlantic Avenue Elevated continuing east between Motte Street and the railroad.

I'm not sure if the right tracks went anywhere between the opening of the tunnel in 1897 and 1901. The right-of-way connecting the right tracks to the elevated was used for parking by 1929; the portal was just south of Pleasant Street (by then part of Broadway) between Porter and Kirkland Streets, and was also being used for parking.

By 1961, the left tracks continued along Tremont Avenue to a loop at Lenox Street. At one time another line went east from here on Pleasant Street and Broadway to the Broadway station on the Red Line, using the abandoned streetcar tunnel (not sure about the details at the South Boston end). --SPUI 10:16, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

(In the older copy of the photo, the caption is "the subway near Hollis Street, showing the sub-subway" (i.e., where New England Medical Center is now). I believe that the split is actually a wee bit south of that, where Tremont crosses Shawmut and becomes Oak. --IMeowbot 10:25, 1 May 2005 (UTC))
