[edit] Rip Itunes DRM files to the HDD
I haven't put this in the article yet but, if you hook up an Ipod (via USB) to the PS3 you can rip Itunes DRM protected files. All you do is go to the Music section of the XMB, then select the Ipod from the list of removable media (i.e. memory cards, usb flash drives), hit Triangle and select view all. You will then see a folder named Itunes or Music I cant remember, then dig around and you will see your Ipod's Itunes DRM library. You must have ACC playback enabled in the system settings to play the files. Unfortunately when your viewing the files, the artist and the track name are gone. The music folders and songs themselves look like someone mashed a keyboard (i.e. "hdwqv" would be the name of an music file). Check it out, I have a bunch of songs on my PS3 HDD. The PS3 cant play the Ipod though, but who cares when you can rip DRM files. DevonTheDude (talk) 06:44, 26 February 2008 (UTC)DevonTheDudeDevonTheDude (talk) 06:44, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
- I cant see how its relevant. And discussion pages work from the bottom up, not down. john.n-irl (talk) 19:22, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
I mentioned it b/c software to unlock DRM Itunes files is very scarce, even on PC. Just glad to know the PS3 can do it with out any additional software / hacks. It's a great way to put music on your PS3, epically if you use Itunes /Ipod.
- There's a gazillion programs which can get your itunes off an Ipod. Try Comparison_of_iPod_managers or floola for a multi platform program which does this. Furrycushion (talk) 08:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Are the programs legal and do they come pre-installed on the computer? The PS3 rips DRM Itunes files right out of the box, no 3rd party software required. A great feature since more games are including custom soundtracks and someday (Summer 08' according to SCE) In-game XMB music. http://n4g.com/ps3/News-118249.aspx DevonTheDude (talk) 23:52, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- I am not a lawyer but it all might depend on whether you live in the US or a country with more freedoms, like China. However 30 of them on the link I gave are free. Furrycushion (talk) 13:36, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Thats what I figured but the PS3 has been out for 1.5 years and still no lawsuit, I figured that people would want to know especially with in-game xmb coming soon. DevonTheDude (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 04:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] 80 GB still available?
In the retail configurations table, it says that the 80 GB model is still in production. I don't think it is available anymore, and won't be until June, when the new version comes out. Can anyone confirm this? —Wikiperson0202 (talk) 19:34, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've asked a sales person at Best Buy, and that's what they said too. No retail stores carry it at the moment[, until June]. Just Gamestop (Refurbished only.) I even went to wal-mart in person to check it out (both regular and superstores.) there's also this source: http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/24/best-buy-quitting-the-80gb-ps3/ as well. 71.90.128.212 (talk) 20:57, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
- The 80GB PS3s (Refurbished) have been removed from the gamestop website by the way. 68.190.115.253 (talk) 16:52, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
- While this may or may not be actual "proof", this will hopefully be enough evidence that the 80GB PS3 is still in production. MastrCake (talk) 21:58, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
Is this true? I went to my local wal-mart yesterday and they told me that they have no plans to restock, all they had was the 40 Gig. I thought it was just that one store seeing as how it's located in a really small town. But then I went to walmart.com and I couldn't find one there either. Is it just walmart or is everyone only stocking the 40 Gig?Zabbethx (talk) 12:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Gamestop said they removed the 80 GB PS3s from their website (refurbished ones only anyway) because they heard Sony saying they have no plans to resume production of the 80 GBs. 68.190.115.253 (talk) 15:13, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
The 80G come out on the 12 of June. The 80G will have MGS4 and a controler. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Celman (talk • contribs) 03:22, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- I meant separately. 68.190.115.253 (talk) 04:50, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Japanese Games
Does anyone know if Japanese games, mainly from PS2, can be played on the PS3 without having to buy any additional components? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.176.117.190 (talk) 01:39, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
- No, they can't. PS2 games aren't regionless (nor are PSX/One Games), the hardware for the PS2 included isn't regionless either (same goes for the software emulation.) Note, to even play PS2 games, you need an 80, 20, 60 GB version. 71.90.128.212 (talk) 05:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] lacks IPTV subsection in "software" section!
i've created the MegaTV (Korea) stub. :) PlayTV will be available soon anyway. Cliché Online (talk) 17:58, 28 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] PS2 Compatibility
I notice that in the "Retail configurations" section, the 40GB model is listed without PS2 compatibility, but the caption below says that "All models include: ... PlayStation backward compatibility through software emulation". Is this a mistake? Does the caption mean PS1 compatibility? I don't own this console so I cannot confirm and update myself, but it would be nice to make this more clear. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.82.242.132 (talk) 10:02, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Seems pretty clear to me... PlayStation == Playstation != PlayStation 2... I dont know how you can make this clearer... --Vylen (talk) 12:15, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- All PS3s have Playstation backwards compatibility, but not all have Playstation 2 backwards compatibility. So yes, the caption is with regards to PS1 backwards compatibility. Chan Yin Keen | Talk 12:46, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
The 80G PS3 will all most play all PS1 and PS2 games.
- There aren't any availible anymore on gamestop's website. Best place to go is eBay and look for them then. Gamestop pulled them due to Sony telling them that they are no longer in production =/ 68.190.115.253 (talk) 04:51, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Firmware Version
The Current firmware is up to 2.35 as of May 15th and Supports all previous fixes including the BLU-RAY PROFILE 2.0 (Blu-Ray LIVE!) which made the PLAYSTATION 3 the first Blu-Ray player with full features. This also prevents the use of Pelican's Codebreaker. Oh well. I yet to be able to use the 2.0 features. 2.35 also fixes issues with some games. AD7BK (talk) 22:54, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
- This was already mentioned under the Software section but I've noted it in the introduction as well. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 08:00, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- The edit I mentioned above was reverted. I really do think this should be mentioned in the intoduction as this is a major feature of the console. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 16:55, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have now put this back in. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 08:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Playing AVI and DIVX problems
The article should mention that there are many problems with playing avi/divx files. Some just don't want to play. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.48.162.157 (talk) 04:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- All .avi and .divx files encoded with the DivX encoder should work. Xvid (and other codecs) is not the same thing. No problems have been officially reported with DivX files as far as I know. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 07:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, I assumed you meant divx, not diux? ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 08:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
You can also play Xvid files...
Untraceable2U (talk) 04:23, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, tt says that in the article, sorry. :) I must be thinking of another codec. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 12:21, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Why
Why does no one sell the 80gb model? I just saw above that they're not being released until June; anyone know the exact date? Also, what is the expected availability? 68.50.107.144 (talk) 21:53, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- June 12, according to this link. Also, please try to ask general questions about the PS3 on forums, as the talk page is not one. They can be more than helpful for this type of question. MastrCake (talk) 22:04, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oops, I forgot that this doesn't say the actual date. This does. MastrCake (talk) 22:11, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's also only in a bundle. Sony has NO plans whatsoever to continue making separate packages for ONLY the 80 GB System. This means people can expect not to see PS2 support on a PS3 for quite some time. There's also an EXTREME limit to the PS3 bundles stores are getting. Some stores aren't getting ANY at all. One gamestop is only getting a whopping two in all! 68.190.115.253 (talk) 15:15, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- This talk page is not a forum, as mentioned above, for discussing the Playstation 3, but for how to improve the article. Please take general questions to the Reference Desk. Useight (talk) 16:13, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know. Sorry about that. But I hate registering new users for forums I don't plan to go to, like ever. (IE: Sony's official forums.) 68.190.115.253 (talk) 04:52, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] More recent reviews
The intro of the reception section talks about how "after a series of price drops and the release of several quality titles, the system (ps3) has begun to receive better reviews", but only has a few of those recent reviews - and some aren't exactly that recent. Here's a review of the PS3 from Ars Technica that was only posted a few days ago. Should we include some quotes from this review, or will the reception section be alright as it is? Frvernchanezzz (talk) 04:45, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think the new arstechnica review should be mentioned as it clearly says the console has improved significantly since launch.--Kozuch (talk) 10:39, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] White Color
I read in the article that the white PS3 is out in the US but it's not. And the source you have is saying Sony is planning to release it. So it's not released yet. Hylian pirate (talk) 18:27, 6 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Stops Reading Discs
Alot Alot Alot of playStation3's of what appears to be all models (60 mostly also 40 and some 80's) are at some point in their life (a couple weeks or months) stopping readding all discs this should be on the wiki page and maybe a few statistics on how many? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.36.180.150 (talk) 01:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- If there were any official news on it sure. But thus far all I can find are forum postings about PS3s not reading discs. Forums aren't exactly the best source for news, so until something official comes up, we're gonna have to sit on our hands until then. Chan Yin Keen | Talk 03:11, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Spacing (RESOLVED)
Can anyone see what's wrong with the spacing on the model comparison table. The entries under 60GB in the colors row are not evenly spaced. I have looked at the code and can't see what's causing it. I know it's not a big deal but if anyone can see what's causing it, please fix it. It's bugging me! :) Cheers. ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 12:56, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks Silver Edge. I can't really see what you did (the code looks the same) but it worked. Cheers. It was anoying me! ChimpanzeeUK - User | Talk | Contribs 16:51, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
