Player's Choice Video Games (a.k.a. Player's Choice) is a small string of retail businesses, based in North Carolina, USA (with one store in Virginia), that specialize in buying and selling used video games. Started in the early 1990s by entrepreneur John McBride, it had an inauspicious start that quickly blossomed into several independently owned and operated stores spread over two states.
[edit] Nature of Business
The original Player's Choice store simply sold and rented video games and video game consoles. Since then, several new stores have opened that specialize in game, as well as DVD rentals, new and used video game and console sales, game console repairs, and some stores have even opened cyber-cafes.
The Player's Choice located in Clemmons, NC even runs an online game and DVD rental company, similar to Netflix, except they also rent video games.
[edit] Future of Player's Choice
While the business name, as a whole, is in a state of expansion, every store has its own private owner. Each owner dictates their own store policy, including advertising as well as choosing store location. As a result, the amount of business done by each store varies drastically. Currently, the original Player's Choice store, based in Winston-Salem, NC, owned by founder John McBride, is the highest earning store. While there is loose collaboration and cooperation among the store owners, there is no support network, like with corporate companies. While many admire the entrepreneurial spirit of the store operators, some customers have expressed aggravation of the varying store policies. Despite these drawbacks, the future of the company is bright, especially with the expanding video game market.
