Platte is a city in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 1,367 at the 2000 census. The community is named after the Platte Creek.

Settlement began in the area in the early 1880s. A fur trader named Bernard Pratte once lived in the area. A mistranscription of his name gave rise the the name of Platte Creek and the city.

Platte is located at 43°23′11″N, 98°50′34″W (43.386321, -98.842736)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), all of it land.

Platte has been assigned the ZIP code 57369 and the FIPS place code 50260.

The community is at the junction of Routes 44 and 45.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,367 people, 587 households, and 363 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,364.4 people per square mile (527.8/km²). There were 637 housing units at an average density of 635.8/sq mi (245.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.20% White, 0.29% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.07% from other races, and 0.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.66% of the population.

There were 587 households out of which 26.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 37.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 23.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 21.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 29.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $30,369, and the median income for a family was $38,750. Males had a median income of $27,283 versus $19,464 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,962. About 3.0% of families and 5.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.8% of those under age 18 and 12.0% of those age 65 or over.
