Plasmacytoma refers to a malignant monoclonal plasma cell tumor growing within soft tissue. It is similar to multiple myeloma, but lacks the bone changes and resultant hypercalcemia seen in multiple myeloma. It is diagnosed by plasmaphoresis and bone marrow biopsy. Plasmaphoesis with show a monoclonal M spike but bone marrow biopsy will fail to find the classical signs of multiple myeloma. After those two determinations are made, search for the primary search in the soft tissue begins.
When used without modifiers, the term is used to describe the disease "Extramedullary plasmacytoma" (with "extramedullary" meaning outside of the bone marrow.)
