Plasma skimming

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The hematocrit levels decrease in small blood vessels. Several explanations to this phenomena exist:

1. A cell-free layer exists at the wall. 2. The red cells are elongated and oriented in a shear flow. 3. Plasma skimming: a small side branch of a vessel draws blood from the vessel mainly from the cell-free layer, and the hematocrit in the side branch is smaller.
