[edit] notability

My impression is that the lake is much less notable than the prison, therefore I propose moving this article to Plötzensee (lake) and redirecting Plötzensee to Plötzensee Prison. any objections? Yaan (talk) 10:08, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] requested move

The result of the proposal was restore the title "Plötzensee", per the discussion below. Dekimasuよ! 14:25, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Lake Plötzen is a partial translation of the German name of the lake (Plötzensee), which literally means "Roach lake". There is nothing gained from translating one part of the name and not the other, and the lake is so non-notable that I doubt any English name exists. In this case, I suppose the local name should be preferred over some made-up translation via WP:MOSPN.

Moreover, calling the lake Plötzensee is also more consistent with the name of the (much more notable) prison of the same (in German anyway) name.

There are 51 google scholar hits for "Plötzensee water berlin" [1], but many of these seem to refer to the prison. "lake-Plötzen water berlin" yields no hit [2]. Yaan (talk) 19:03, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Then we move it to the correct translation (the point being the translation) as per wiki guidelines. More information can be found here, where it states It is Wikipedia convention to emphasize alternate names at first use, normally in the first line. It is customary to bold the article title name, and its frequently used English language synonyms, and to italicize foreign or historic names represented in Roman script On a side note, there is not such resistance from Spanish or Italian users to have lake names under "Lago" - because proper translation is to "Lake" Rarelibra (talk) 15:36, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
The point is not translation, the point is proper name. And the proper name is "Plötzensee". Unless you can prove some other name is more common in English usage. Yaan (talk) 15:46, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
additional comment: Lake Plötzen is also a neologism, the choice between "Roach lake", "Plötzen Lake", "Plötze Lake", "Lake Plötze", and "Lake Plötzen" is completely arbitrary and looks very much like OR. We don't have articles on River Al Arab, Lake Qing (a.k.a. something different than Lake Koko), Lake Lop, etc. Btw. I fail to see how the quote in rarelibra's last comment is relevant to the naming of articles rather than only to the writing of the intro sentence ( "[Lake] Plötzensee (literally roach lake) is a lake in Berlin ...") Support as per my comments above. Yaan (talk) 12:07, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree that Plötzensee is the common name for the lake. "Lake Plötzen" does not even give me any results in GB. Olessi (talk) 03:52, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Lake Plötze, on the other hand, could be kind of analogous to Lake Tegel [3]. ;-) Yaan (talk) 17:07, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
