[edit] Questions about Wiki Experience from a Newbie

Hi, In December I tried my first minor edits to Wikipedia articles and checking back now, I don't see them. I thought these were bits of information that were commonly known, but the page history indicates maybe they weren't accepted. Is this likely, and why? Should I provide references to verify what I add? Also, I've got a snotty message from some guy about adding a fan forum link, when I see these on plenty of other celebrity articles. What should I think about this? Thanks for the help. Pkeets 01:52, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Pkeets,
It's recommended that you always cite your sources, even if it seems to be common knowledge. (Some users may think it unverifiable and remove it.)
On the fan forum link: if you see the fan forum links on numerous other articles, mention that in a message on the talk page. If the subject of that article indeed has a large fan forum, and it's relevant to the article, it would probably be useful; however, if you are getting warnings about it, it may be best to first discuss. --Wikiacc 20:41, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I did notice that some articles linked to the ones I worked on are now missing, which leaves a link hanging. If you're going to delete articles, shouldn't someone clean up these broken links? Pkeets 02:42, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

It depends on the article. If the subject of the article deleted is non-notable or otherwise not deserving of an article, the links to it are usually removed. If the subject is notable, we usually keep the links so people can find them later and create a good article. (Redirects to the deleted page are always deleted.) --Wikiacc 20:41, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sandii & the Sunsetz

This article was deleted because it did not contain evidence of the topic's notability. I think this was too quick for that: you should have been given time to fix it up after just creating it. However, in this case the text is copied directly from the websites listed at the bottom, which is not allowed. If you are making articles from the Requested articles page you should do a little check to make sure the text is not copied from somewhere else. —Centrxtalk • 04:21, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi, N. Can you retrieve the info for me? This was an "article requested for two years" and I had done considerable work in assembling the info, which I was in process of assembling into an article. It was ill considered to save it in that condition, but the fact remains now that the work I had done on it is lost if you can't retrieve it. Pkeets 04:25, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

I've taken a closer look. Here is the beginning and end parts, that you created. Everything in between was from the linked websites. Note in the future though, you can't begin the page with the copied content and then work from there. It's possible no one will notice, but if the copyright holder does contact the Wikimedia Foundation, the entire page might end up having to be deleted (and it also does pose this practical problem of an admin hastily deleting it after seeing a copy-paste page, which are typically not improved).

Good job. Thanks. I added just a wee bits. Bearian 21:48, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VK bands

The only thing I can think of that would establish notability in any of these cases would be a discography, maybe. All those bands never released anything major in Japan that I can think of offhand, and I'm not even sure if any of them ever released an album. You're looking at bands that lasted two to three years, and that was it. As such, they don't meet notability guidelines as they stand now.

what you need is back issues of Fool's Mate and SHOXX, and I don't have any from the time period you need. If you can find scans, I can certainly read them and add them if they're useful. What you might want to do in the meantime is let the articles go, and start with a label article on Key Party, because they had anybody who was anybody at the time. however, I would suggest you move your current articles to userspace and continue to work on them. However, TBH, I don't think any of those bands were notable for themselves; rather, they were notable only because a small niche group of people picked up on the genre and pushed it regardless of quality of music. However, a label as a driving force is notable, esp. with the Key Party concerts and omnibus albums. Matina and Soleil did similar things as well. In short, come at your topic from a different angle, and remember to sign your posts with four tildes. MSJapan 00:25, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Edit the page you want to move, select all the text, and then copy/paste it to a subpage (you would make a subpage by doing User:Pkeets/whatever, and you can do that repeatedly), and that's it. Japanese Net sources on VK bands are minimal, and usually don't meet RS. For MR, I found grass thread, the VK DB, an even worse article on the Japanese WP, and that's about it. You really need the mags, because they were mainstream enough and covered the bands multiple times. MSJapan 01:37, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Yoshukai International

An editor has nominated Yoshukai International, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yoshukai International and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. [edit] Re: Deleted Key Party Records Reference

Let me quote the FAQ on jrocksaga.com:

› Who are you and why do you keep this website?
I'm a 20-something portuguese lass. My online nickname is klept, although I have a couple of other aliases (it's pretty random but I'm pretty much the same person! ;). I keep this site because I love japanese rock and I want to share it with as many people as possible and also because this site makes a good web project where I can experiment different ideas.

So basically, it's just a random person running a self-published web page with a lot of content on Japanese rock music. Or in other words, a fan site. This does not qualify as a reliable source per WP:RS and hence should not be used to reference information on Wikipedia. I know there are not all that many reliable English sources on modern Japanese music but you can always turn to places like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Japan and editors from that project if you need help with Japanese sources.

One more thing: If one of your additions is being removed, with a rationale and/or an applicable guideline given in the other editors edit summary, try to discuss this matter immediately, or add a rationale in your own summary, should you revert the removal (like you did here, but without a summary). More communication between editors = less stress for everyone involved. Have a nice day - Cyrus XIII 15:17, 14 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Yoshukai International

Sorry about re adding fact tag, missed the retired gynaecologist bit when I skimmed the ref 1st time, just seen to many MA instructors claiming the title dr/prof, without evidence of or, usually, any legitimate reason at all. --Nate 08:39, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Visual kei

Unfortunately, I don't think I can really help. I've only worked on visual kei related stuff as part of a project to work on all the "music ofs" and such articles - I don't really have any particular knowledge of visual kei, or sources that would really help expand info in that area. Sorry... Tuf-Kat 03:29, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Well... he's probably right. In most cases, fan sites are not reliable sources - we didn't use to be very strict about that kind of thing, but they really should be verified with more appropriate resources. Tuf-Kat 18:22, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] License tagging for Image:TheWhoLiveFromTorontoCover.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:TheWhoLiveFromTorontoCover.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 05:07, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:TheWhoLiveFromTorontoCover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:TheWhoLiveFromTorontoCover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 18:55, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lawrence Ball

A {{prod}} template has been added to the article Lawrence Ball, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. Oli Filth 23:45, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Aliene Ma'riage

I know you have worked on this before - he deleted the main page and "integrated" the info into the opening paragraph. I actually started this hoping someone would come flesh it out. Will you take a look? [[2]]Denaar 13:03, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I'll try to get around digging up some information on Missalina Rei and see what I can find. They aren't a recent band so that means digging through magazines. I do know a little about the Bass player's later bands. :) Denaar 05:14, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Gods of rock and roll

Gods of rock and roll, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gods of rock and roll and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Gods of rock and roll during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. [edit] Need Info on Using Permissions for Photos

{{helpme}}

I have photos from Lawrence Ball and email permission to use them. I uploaded one and thought I had described the permission adequately, but it was deleted. I've tried asking in several places how to register the permissions with no response.

quite simply, it can't be fair use and Creative Commons at the same time, this what was said at the time by the person who deleted it on the deletion log, if you want to clear this up, contact him.

[edit] Replaceable fair use Image:HeatherMills.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:HeatherMills.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. Thanks for uploading Image:BuddysSong.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

The following images also have this problem:

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:16, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
