Talk:Pity Me
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From Gideon Longs blog http://forums.gideontech.com 'Pity Me is one of several English place names which testify to the influence of French, imported to Britain after the Norman invasion of 1066.
The village was thought to have been sited on a small lake, and took its name from Petit Mere, the French for Little Sea.'
... remember, the district was controlled by the bishops of durham who used norman french.
This is much more plausible than the 'pithead mere' thing because the name appears to pre-date mine pumps and, probably minimg itself in this district 82.38.112.68 09:07, 29 June 2007 (UTC)mikeL
