[edit] Pit Fighting History
Pit Fighting is a martial art developed in the United States from indigenous fighting methods. It is primarily a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes. It came about in America where fighters who were not in organized combat sports such as boxing or MMA, and fought in pits for money, pride, and respect. Pioneers like Tank Abbott and Scott Ferrozzo proved to many that you did not need to have a black belt to compete in MMA. Pit Fighting was the best way for great fighters to fight even if it was not televised.
[edit] MMA Organizations using Pit Fighting in their name
Yamma Pit Fighting is a new mixed martial arts promotion that was created by former UFC mastermind Robert Meyrowitz. The promotion's first event, YAMMA 1, was held on April 11, 2008 in Atlantic City, New Jersey at the Trump Taj Mahal. It sported what was referred to as a revolutionary fighting structure which turned out to be a large circular cage with a fence surrounding it and that elevated as it rose up to the outer edge of the cage. The stated purpose of the rising at the outer edges was to prevent fighters from cornering their opponents into the corner. Rather, the rising edge of the Yamma Pit was to facilitate more action.
[edit] Pit Fighting first Name used for realistic fighting games
Pit-Fighter is a 1990 arcade fighting game by Atari Games. It was revolutionary because it was the first video game ever to feature digitized characters using real life actors. Pit-Fighter is a 3rd-person fight game that features digitized graphics of real fighters and zooming effects. Players select one of three fighters (Buzz, Ty or Kato) to take on anyone who dares. At the conclusion of a match, players are individually awarded a Knockout Bonus, Brutality Bonus, and a Fight Purse. Every third match is a Grudge Match where players test the skills of each other. The last man standing is the winner of this three-knockdown match. Players fight their way to the Elimination Match to decide who wins the opportunity to dethrone the champion, the Masked Warrior.
[edit] Pit Fighting made into a movie called Pit Fighter in 2005
Pit Fighter is a 2005 action movie directed by Jesse Johnson. The film stars Dominique Vandenberg, Steven Bauer and Stephen Graham. The film opens up to images of a South American underground fight club. The crowd is warmed up to the violence by chained dogs snarling and lashing out, held just out of range by their collars. A feeling of routine is pervasive in something we might find abhorrent. Money exchanges hands. The kind of music you'd expect from a Rodriguez film begins, but the tone instead is slightly mournful. All the while, fleeting scenes of the fighters parading towards the ring, heads covered and bowed, become the primary focus. It's fight night, and the crowd wants blood. The battle is part Ultimate Fighting Championship, part Bloodsport riff, but it's well put together, and well shot. Brutal, violent, and quick. A pile of money goes to victor's trainer, and they walk out as they came in. All in a night's work for a pit fighter.
