Pishin (Pashto: پشین) is a district in the north west of Balochistan province of Pakistan. Prior to 1975 it was knowns as Pasahang.[citation needed] Pishin was a part of the Quetta Pishin district. For administrative reasons Pishin was separated from Quetta and was made a new district on 18th January 1975. The district consists of four tehsil, Pishin, Karizat, Barshoor and Hurramzai. Over 99% of the people of the area are Muslims. The population of Pishin district is estimated to be over 400,000 in 2005, majority of whom are Pashtuns. It consists of a large plain surrounded on three sides by hills, which formerly belonged to Afghanistan but was ceded to the British by the treaty of Gandamak in 1879.

Pishin district has very significant place in Balochistan province, as most of the skilled and educated people working in and around Balochistan belong to Pishin. The tehsil Huramzai is enjoying particular status for its talented and educated youths.

One of living legends is the talented youth from Bostan Shoaib Khan Panezai s/o Alamgir khan, Who for the first time in the history of First-Class cricket of Balochistan province scored 884 Runs in 10 matches of Quad-e-Azam trophy 2007 and remained second highest scorer whole over the country. He also represented the prestigious cricket club Morley CC 1889 in Bradford league. The players of Huramzai are very familiar figures in Balochistan in the fields of Cricket & Football. When it comes to Cricket, Star Cricket Club of Pishin city is one of the best cricket club in the district. It has produced one of the best players of cricket in Balochistan. Like Syed Salahuddin Agha, It has won maximum number of tournaments in the area.

In Pishin District basically four tribes are living Namely Tareen, Kakar, Achakzai, and Syed. Tareens are in most numerical strength and comprise 60% of the whole district population. The most ancient and educated tribe is Tareen Tribe. Sardar Mustafa Khan Tareen, Syed Muhammad Fazal Agha, Sarwar Kakar (late), Sardar Bashir Khan Tareen, Sarder Mustafa Khan Tareen, Sardar Faisal S.Khan Tareen and Muhammad Hashim khan panezai are the main notable persons of the area Achakzais which basically belong to Killa Abdullah & Afghanistan, has now established their identity in Pishin District also. Pishin has very good soil for production of good quality apple, cherry, almond, grapes, plum etc. The main source of income for the large number of population is these orchards, despite livestock keeping.
