Pirates versus Ninjas (or vice versa) is an internet meme that circulates in the form of an ongoing debate that asks the question "Who would win in a fight: pirates or ninjas?".

[edit] Recent History

Although its exact origins are disputed, the PvN meme took hold in the early 21st Century. Both Robert Hamburger's Real Ultimate Power website in March of 2002 [1] and the inclusion of the meme in webcomic author Scott Kurtz's PvP in June of 2002, in a strip titled Ninja vs. Pirate.[2] were early verifiable appearances.

By 2005 the meme had begun to cross over into other media, with several short films including Pirate-Ninja Battle and Pirates Vs. Ninjas: The Movie appearing on YouTube (the latter premiering on June 18th of that year). In 2006, The Australian Anime and Game convention AVCon used 'Pirates vs. Ninjas' as their official theme[3]. Attendees were asked to pick a side and events throughout the day added points to each side's score; Pirates got 1593 points, and Ninjas got 1623, but the winner was Cowboys.[4] And more recently the meme has mutated into Naruto(Ninjas) vs One Piece(Pirates) at Anime Boston and was acted out in several skits during the cosplay masquerade.

A slew of Pirate vs Ninja themed websites appeared, including Ninjas and Pirates, which allows members to join either the Ninja or Pirates and compete for control of the site every week. Other such competitive games also appeared that year, including PVNgame.com and a popular viral Facebook application[5] with millions of users[6] that allows players to recruit other members and battle one another for supremacy.[7]

Antarctic Press has published a Pirates Vs. Ninjas comic book line[8] since 2005 including a spin-off entitled Ghost Pirates vs. Ghost Ninjas. In 2007, Gamecock announced that they would be releasing Pirates Vs. Ninjas Dodgeball in 2008, an Xbox Live Arcade game pitting pirates vs ninjas (among other groups) against each other in dodgeball.[9]
