Piracy Funds Terrorism is the first volume in a proposed series of mixtapes featuring UK genre-bending rap artist M.I.A. and Philadelphia-based DJ Diplo, made and released on the site TurntableLab.com and at M.I.A.'s live shows in December 2004.[1] The mixtape features songs Arulpragasam composed and produced using the 505 and with her co-producers for her debut album Arular, fused together with songs of other noted musicians.[2] The buzz throughout 2004 surrounding her two earlier released singles "Galang" and "Sunshowers," which included the B-side "Fire Fire", and anticipation for her delayed album, was added to with the mixtape, becoming popular with M.I.A.'s fanbase within the blogosphere and elsewhere at the end of the year. [3]

It was placed number twenty-three on the The Village Voice's annual poll for the best album of 2004[4] and listed number twelve on Pitchfork’s 2004 end of year list. Critic Robert Christgau, while appreciating the mashup mixtape, stated in his 2004 review "I find more fascination - and pleasure, if not variety - in M.I.A. juxtaposed against herself than in, for instance, favela funk juxtaposed against "Walk Like an Egyptian...I'll take M.I.A. I'll take the conscious, autonomous individual artist."[5]

[edit] Samples

[edit] Subsequent pressings

The first pressing of Piracy Funds Terrorism had an incorrect track listing which inevitably led to confusion. This was corrected upon the second issue of the album. However a sample used in "Two Bit Rhythm" [M.I.A.'s Mix] of the mixtape caused legal problems, so on the third pressing, Diplo replaced it with M.I.A.'s "Pull Up the People". He also remixed the "M.I.A./Cutty Ranks" track for unknown reasons, replacing the original samples with a mash-up of the Cutty Ranks a cappella and Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot".
