[edit] Status of Echo Park Store

It appears that the Echo Park franchise is now defunct as of summer 2005.

As of November 2006, the Echo Park location (the chain's original restaurant) is still operating, though its future is very much in doubt due to redevelopment activity in the area. There are plans to build a Trader Joe's on the property where it is located, and It most likely will close some time in 2007.

Pioneer Chicken was the absolute best chicken ever!!! That golden orange crust and the tender succulent chicken inside helped to add to the girth I have today. I miss it so much!

[edit] Need the Recipe

There must be some one out there that knows the recipe for the coating. If any one is willing to part with it, send it to: kingfufu@shreve.net Thanks so much for your help in this matter... kingfufu

[edit] California Chicken

If the Wikipedia site is correct, the new parent company has renamed the franchise and is marketing the very same recipe as "California Chicken" currently within China. They should test market it in Hawaii and California with the new "California Chicken" name and just do it world-wide. Bet they'd make billions... Ibn Ithl, Honolulu, HI

Would also love the recipe...Their chicken was so much better that KFC or Popeyes...

[edit] Pioneer Chicken,,,,, mmmm,,,,, the old days were great!!!

My father and I used to go out for drives at night and explore the neighboring cities. We lived in La Mirada, CA and, by chance one night when I was about 7 we stumbled accross a Pioneer chain on Imperial Hwy. in La Habra. Little did I know at the time my dad and I would become BIG Pioneer Chicken fans! Being a Southerner , my dad had a "special liking" for the gizzards,,,,mmmm,,, they were good! I miss them very much! The chicken, was very different from other fast food fried chicken chains of the time and, in my opinion, was the best chicken around, hands down! Unfortunately, either the rest of the public did not agree, or quite simply with alot of other chains that went by the wayside they were good but could'nt seem to compete against the bigger chains. Trust me,,, I don't think anybody who has experienced Pioneer Chicken in the early days would shed a single tear if it replaced "Kentucky Fried Chicken" as the king of the fried chicken chains.

The last Pioneer Chicken experience I had was in the mid-late 80's where I happened to stumble accross a rogue chain in Santa Ana/Costa Mesa area on, what I think was Red Hill or Newport Ave right off the 5 fwy. I will have to carry that memory with me for the rest of my life,,, unfortunately, since they appear to be gone now from our area in OC.

If anybody is willing to revive/repackage this old chain I certainly would would be interested in giving a hand!

As far as the recipe is concerned. Definately in the Tempura or better yet, Beer Batter line of foods. I have thought about that recipe for years. In my experience I think that a Tempura/Beer Batter recipe is worth exploring. If anybody has any better ideas,,, or wish to add, I would like to know.
