[edit] Three hundred non-articles

Yo, Pinkville, pull up your sleeves and get down to work! Or at least comment. Ta fanx! -- Hoary 06:30, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Aargh... I'll begin adding content to some of these article-snippets as soon as I can. Pinkville 12:44, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Robert Cohen (writer)

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Robert Cohen (writer), and it appears to be a substantial copy of http://www.dramaticpublishing.com/AuthorBio.php?titlelink=10103. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. CorenSearchBot 11:47, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

It's also possible that the bot mistook the perp. Here's the dirty deed. -- Hoary 05:20, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

I shifted a copyright violation article someone had dumped on a disambiguation page onto a new article page - big mistake! The article was not only a copyright violation, but redundant - there's already a WP article on this particular Robert Cohen... Bummer. Pinkville 02:03, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Disderi

Hi, of course his full name is André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri, but everyone calls him Disderi, just like we call George Herman Ruth, Jr., "Babe Ruth" Nobody knows him by the VERY long name. Also I don't think we should have all the dashes. The french wiki and most books do not have the dashes. --Persianhistory2008 (talk) 23:07, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

I wish I could accept what you say, but look again at the authoritative sources I provided on the article's talk page. My field of work is largely focussed on 19th century photography and most scholarly (and indeed popular) works I've consulted (over the years) refer to him by one of the variants that include at least one given name with his surname, or intitials with his surname, and only very rarely his surname alone. I'm not too troubled about the traits d'union linking his given names, though, again, most authoritative sources prefer one or another of the variants with traits d'union. There's no clear preference or trend in the use or non-use of "traits d'union" in his name, so I opted for the form that was most prevalent in the authoritative sources I consulted. Pinkville (talk) 01:27, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
I guess you don't know too many 19th century photography curators and historians. Everyone I know calls him Disderi. Not one person in the past 40 years (I have collected) had called him by his very long french name. If I find the time, I will give you dozens of citations, but it appears to be a waste of time because I have a feel you want to debate about a subject you are not too familiar with. Not worth wasting time on this. Good luck!--Persianhistory2008 (talk) 03:12, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pinkville, I enjoyed reading your reasoned objections to my contributions. I've put in my "last word" on the talk page, and hope you can respond there. Thanks! :-) Ling.Nut (talk) 10:04, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your question

Appolagies I have only just spotted your question, for some inexplicable reason I did not notice it on my watch list. I will endevour to answer it ASAP. Giano (talk) 18:34, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

No worries. I'm sorry i posted it at such a late date! And I believe you've had rather more discussion to deal with than some other candidates... Pinkville (talk) 21:53, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Admin

Hi. I just wondered if you've considered becoming an admin. You seem experienced enough, so I'd be willing to nominate you if you're interested. Regards. Epbr123 (talk) 21:32, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your kind offer but for the time being I'd rather continue to focus on writing in Wikipedia rather than take on administrative functions. All the best. Pinkville (talk) 23:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Don't be a silly billy, Pink. You can do as I do: stick the mop and bucket in a cupboard and only bring them out when needed. Administering takes little of my time; clearing up ever so slightly after other people's intercoursing bots takes a lot longer (as you very kindly noticed). So: are you going to say yes or are you going to say yes? -- Hoary (talk) 14:54, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
The initiation rites scare me... Seriously, I had the impression a lot of your time was spent dealing with Admin doodies... Can you really leave the mop and bucket in the cupboard much of the time? Pinkville (talk) 15:08, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Look at my "contributions": I think it's been days since I used any superpower other than once or twice hitting "revert" when I'd have otherwise had to use "undo" (the two are very close indeed) and once noticing that there was a history of deleted versions of a certain page and then reading some of those deleted versions. Admins can do as much or as little work as they want; there's no quota of AfD debates to be wound up or whatever. (Actually I never don my admin hat when considering AfDs, as I know my gut reaction is to delete a greatly higher percentage than Joe Q Average Wikipedian believes should be deleted.) Once every two months or so I get some message on my talk page: "Hi, I see you're an administrator; can you possibly [blah blah blah]". I've answered both yes and no. (Very often, such requests show a misunderstanding of what an administrator does: these people often want something akin to a moderator, whereas an administrator merely has a few more links to click in following the rules that apply to everybody.) The good thing about being an administrator is when on occasion you see some drunk teenager on a roll (say, adding "and he had a tiny dick!" to dozens of articles) you can zap his editing abilities there and then, rather than having to write up some little report to post somewhere while he merrily continues. -- Hoary (talk) 15:50, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Okay. You've worn down my resistance... [Not very difficult, actually]. I'll run. Pinkville (talk) 20:41, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

I think it's time to give this a try. If you're ready, let me know when you've answered the questions and I'll begin the nom. Good luck. Epbr123 (talk) 13:22, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Mitra Tabrizian

Maybe we should point out how B and L are pronounced. And not in that hifalutin' "IPA" gibberish, but in plain American for plain folks. Like, y'know, Boe-dril-lard (none of that Frenchy "Boe-driyarr" stuff, puhlease). After all, the article does go to the trouble of pointing out that Tehran is in Iran (that's the one that hasn't been invaded yet) and London is in England.

Ain't Wikipedia wonderful? I'm just at MT on vacation from Talk:Kwanzaa; with its echoes of Cosby and dudes. Not that I'm administering anything to anyone. And indeed I'm grateful that I read some of the discussion, as I'm now grappling with the Big Question of how Wikipedia articles can become more neural. -- Hoary (talk) 14:54, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

I tuned in to that discussion earlier this morn... I, too, want more neural articles. By the way, it's Baah-dril-lard, "Baah" like a sheep makes. Pinkville (talk) 15:21, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] On the subject of obscure Japanese artistes

How about this? -- Hoary (talk) 05:24, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Genocide denial

Hi, I appreciate you involvement in the matter of 'Srebrenica genocide denial' in the Edward S. Herman article. I would like to point out to you that the same types of accusations are also made in the Darko Trifunovic and Diana Johnstone articles. The article on former Canadian general Lewis MacKenzie has also been marred by accusations related to the Srebrenica massacre (including accusations of rape and taking bribes from 'Serb lobby' organizations, both poorly presented and sourced). I would very much appreciate if you could take a look at the treatment of these issues in these articles and keep them on watch as these accusations resurface repeatedly. CheersOsli73 (talk) 12:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up! I will keep an eye on these other articles. Ciao! Pinkville (talk) 13:32, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Edward S Herman

Pinkville, nobody is saying that he is Holocaust denier, please don't twist the facts. He is Srebrenica Genocide denier, and what we want included is his own quote, his own words, that's all. Why is it so hard for you to accept there are Srebrenica genocide deniers, and why are you comparing genocide with Holocaust? You are well aware of the involvement and failures of your Dutch troops in Srebrenica, arent you? Do you have agenda here? I am not accusing you of anything, but I am simply curious, and when I am curious, I ask direct questions. LeeCorrie (talk) 21:58, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I've responded at the appropriate page. Pinkville (talk) 16:38, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Those idiot substubs again

Prompted by this addition: not that I'm going to revert you or anything, but I'm quite deliberately not adding any of these stupid substubs to the list while it's still a substub and not worth looking at.

Of course, if you'd care to expand this particular substub. . . . Hoary (talk) 23:53, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Right! I forgot to take that into account! I'll remove the substubs that I added (only one or two, I think). At some point I'll give Mr. Hatakeyama a beef injection... Pinkville (talk) 00:02, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
With a wobbly warhead? -- Hoary (talk) 03:40, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Oh yes. And plenty of sauce. Pinkville (talk) 12:38, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] a thank you note

Thanks for participating in my RfA!
Although it failed 43/27/0, I'm happy because the outcome has been very helpful in many meaningful ways. Your support and remarks contributed so much to this. If you followed my RfA you know what happened. Most of the editors who posted opposing opinions have never edited with me. Some articles I edit deal with controversial topics and with respect to a very few of these, editors who didn't know much about me had some worries about confrontational editing and civility. Since I support their high standards I can easily (and will gladly) address this. The support and ecouragement to run again soon has been wonderful, thanks again. Cheers! Gwen Gale (talk) 05:28, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Thirty quid I'm afraid. Slightly ashamed to admit it. But OTOH, it has given me some amusement, and Amazon do accept returns if the book was an unwanted gift. ;-) BTW, you have mail. Iain99Balderdash and piffle 19:43, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] IW Taber

I am impressed that someone besides myself is interested in obscure Californian photographers! Thanks for the edits. howcheng {chat} 18:41, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

For sure. Acutally I've come to these photographers mainly through my work on 19th century photographers in Japan and China... I have added a bit to the articles on Carleton Watkins and Milton Latham (who commissioned Watkins to photograph his estate), and other related subjects... I hope to get around to writing about Charles L. Weed, when I get the chance. See you again soon, I imagine! Pinkville (talk) 18:55, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] For the connoisseur of AfDs

Try Christian Polak. Some seriously screwy stuff has been going on: I really can't decide what I think. -- Hoary (talk) 00:22, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm... I would ordinarily trust PHG entirely, and the article - though of no particular interest to me - looks fine. But let me look at it more closely when I have easier access to a functioning computer... the other day, mine just slipped into a coma! Must have been some bad suzuki. Pinkville (talk) 00:32, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

The article looks mildly repellent to me, with a too-eager appeal to multiple sources for the smallest claims. Why the desperation? The reasons become hazily apparent in the AfD. My first inclination is to vote "close as undecided until the smoke clears".

Yeah, I noticed that desperation, too... Curious... Pinkville (talk) 01:22, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Yup, my oldest computer (with hardware unaltered since 2000), which I'm using now, sometimes decides that its cursor keys are too tired to work. And its CPU takes its time to display or manipulate big images. I'm moving toward the sad conclusion that I may have to buy a new computer, and, worse, that I might have to break my rule of paying less for a new computer than I've ever paid before. (Even without adjusting for inflation, this old Toshiba cost little more than a third of what I paid for my first computer and two and a half times as much what I paid for my newest computer.) I could get a computer free from my employer, but the last time I did that I had quite some difficulty getting them to change the top secret CMOS password and tell me the new one so that I could boot from CD and install a Linux distro over the Disneyworld OS that was already there; rumors suggest that they're even more authoritarian now, shuddering at the notion that anyone might consign to the bit bucket crap software for which they've paid good money. Plus it would come with a keyboard I'd hate, etc etc. Time for me to reread about laptops not taxed by Micro$oft. -- Hoary (talk) 01:02, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

My beast is a not-quite-two-year-old mac book pro... very discouraging, as I've always been happy with Apple products. I'm attempting a repair tomorrow... We'll see. Pinkville (talk) 01:22, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
I've been rather underwhelmed by my Mac. It's heavy, it's rather slow, I can't work out how to rearrange the keyboard (and for example switch the Command and Control keys), it insists on going "Bong!" when it's turned on, the keyboard's not as good as the much older Toshiba's, the pretty surface of the lid scratches easily, etc. I think Apple pays a lot of attention to prettiness. Of course the system is based on Unix, but then I wonder why I should bother with proprietary folderol on top of Unix rather than just going with GNU/Linux. -- Hoary (talk) 01:29, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, my beast has finally returned home - with a new hard drive, additional RAM, some new programmes, etc. And I am relieved (though I lost much data in the "crash"). I far prefer mac to PC (apart from the word processor, though I'll soon find out what i think of Mac's Pages software) and I've never used Linux... I like Mac for its user-friendliness, reliability (current issues notwithstanding), and graphics... The first computer I used regularly was an Apple II, some time in the mid-late '80s, and I guess I simply got used to it! (I did learn DOS, though, and a few other eccentric programmes such as Minisis, WordStock, etc.). Pinkville (talk) 00:24, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
As for the "Bong!", I just set the volume to "0" when I've finished a session and it's quiet on wake up. Pinkville (talk) 00:27, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Copyedit?

Here, one famous, one world famous, two legendaries, and (just for you) one icon by any measure. How'm I doing? -- Hoary (talk) 10:41, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

I started with this example of ethnic pride, intending to make whatever little changes might be necessary, and then I was overwhelmed by the volume of ejaculatory material throughout the article. Didn't have the heart to continue, and couldn't justify an AfD... Notice that Avendon isn't, apparently, a cultural icon by any measure... Pinkville (talk) 11:53, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Suharto

Is there any chance you can leave your middle-class moral onanism and hear-say gleaned from Western media out of factual articles- especiall y on Suharto. For the overwhelming majority of Indonesiasn- he was a good leader. These 160+million souls care nothig for the primtives of East Timor and Papua. Your smug moralisms reek of Leftist thought-policing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 125.161.130.83 (talk) 19:54, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

I hearby take note that User:125.161.130.83 speaks for the overwhelming majority of Indonesians, 160+million souls. I feel blessed that, caring nothing for the primitives of East Timor and Papua, you nevertheless cared to post a message on my talk page. Pinkville (talk) 20:10, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
