The crown is rounded and dense, and resembles to the that of the unrelated Pinus pinea from the Mediterranean, The cones are cylindrical: 6-12 cm long and 4-5 cm broad. Seeds are large: 1 cm-1.2 cm. Cones mature in November after rain season. It grows in Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas. It grows in a temperate climate with rainfalls in summer and is a very drought tolerant tree and lives in semi-arid conditions too. The seeds are edible and delicious and are very appreciated by people in the region and are so valuable that come to the faraway Mexico City's Markets. Because of its seeds it has been very devastated by people. Only recently it has been cultivated recently and has turned out to be a very beautiful tree as ornamental.
