[edit] History

Pinehurst was started in 2000, in Paris, ON (Until it was relocated to St. Catharines in 2002), by 4 staff members who were originally situated at Robert Land Academy, under the basis that students could benefit from the small class sizes and individual attention they would receive. The treatment they were given was extremely beneficial, and did indeed prove to be beneficial and helped Pinehurst emerge into the following years, receiving more and more students. Pinehurst School has never exceeded over 50 students because the principle idea is that class sizes of less then ten students per class will give students individual attention and allow them to have a real student teacher relationship. Some teachers stay overnight as residential staff, adding to the personal relationship between students and staff. During Pinehurst standowns, situated approximately 3 to 5 weeks apart, students either return to their homes for a 4 to 5 day period, or on Christmas, 2 weeks. The Principal and a Staff member accompany students who have misbehaved during standowns on "Pinehurst North" trips, where they participate in Orienteering, usually in Algonquin Park. These trips give students a chance to contemplate their actions, while also promoting healthy physical activity, and a chance to bond with Staff and Students alike. These trips usually take approximately 4 to 5 days, and teach kids survival skills such as how to use a compass and map, how to stay warm in the winter environment, and how to mind or sterilize water.
