[edit] History

Thomas Ferguson, who, in 1791, bought 321 acres of land for 300 pounds in gold and silver coins, is credited with founding Pine Grove Mills. In 1800, he dammed Slab Cabin Run and built the first of the mills that would eventually give the town its name. According to local tradition, a grove of pine trees separating two of the early mills along the run, provided the rest of the name.

John Patton Jr., son of Centre Furnace ironmaster Col. John Patton, laid out the town of Pattonville at the east end of Pine Grove Mills in 1815 and the entire village went by Pattonville for a time [3].

The post office, founded in 1809, was continually known as the Pine Grove Mills post office, however, and the town eventually reverted to the original name. [4]

In the early 1990's Pine Grove Mills had an increase in gang related violence, like much of the United States. Gangs from Philadelphia and Harrisburg migrated to the Centre County region, especially Pine Grove Mills, due to its lack of strong law enforcement. Although much of the violence has decreased due to an increase in Police it is still considered dangerous and heavily populated by gangs. The main crimes are drug smuggling between major cities in Pennsylvania and illegal importation of firearms specifically from Russia and other Eastern European countries. Gang on gang violence seems to cause the major problems in the town as far as death and weapon related violence go. Gangs from Boalsburg, mainly the Russian Boalas, fight with Pine Grove Gangs, such as Street 45 and Grove Street. All gangs have specific colors and hand symbols to identify themselves, which poses a danger for innocent bystanders. Also, affiliations with the Bloods and Crips cause further separation and confrontation. Recently, there has been an increase in stolen cars and vandalized cars, specifically high performance Japanese and Luxury European Sedans. Authorities are unsure how fare they have penetrated the government and Police departments. Overall, these gangs are extremely dangerous and pose a major threat to the citizens of Pine Grove Mills.
