Pine Flat Lake is a lake in Fresno County, California, about 20 miles (30 km) northeast of Fresno. The lake is formed by Pine Flat Dam on the Kings River. It has a capacity of 1,000,000 acre feet (1.2 km³), making it one of the largest lakes in California. The lake's primary purpose is flood control, but it also provides water for irrigation and groundwater recharge. The dam's 165 MW hydroelectric plant generates electricity, as well. Built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the concrete dam was completed in 1954.
The security measures taken at the dam are greater than at most California dams. A large area in front of the dam that was previously accessible has been closed off, as have some roads and trails. The dam itself cannot be approached from any direction.
