Big hallo from 194.152.217.129.

Well, hallo Pilotguy. I see you blocked my IP 194.152.217.129. Now you can block this one too, but just out of curiosity, it would be really nice to know how do you decide to block someone, and let go another. Personal preference, just because you can, or...?
PS. Have nothing to do with this Paprika guy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.172.17.24 (talk • contribs)

Again: I have these two addresses: 194.152.217.129 and 89.172.17.24 depending on the place I am at the moment. You blocked one of them. I demand an explanation. I think I'm entitled to one, otherwise I will considered it an administrator abuse. Somebody keeps on accusing me of some kind of impersonation. What on earth are you talking about?

Blanking pages

I have no idea what you're talking about. I didn't blank any articles on Wikipedia. I only came close a few days ago when I blanked a page that I created for a WikiProject that barely lasted a day or two. It was speedy deleted. -- Clevelander 00:23, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

I think someone hacked into my account and blanked a template. No, wait, this was a mistake on my part. I'm sorry. -- Clevelander 00:25, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Idea for Vote Templates

Hello Captain!

Currently, on Meta, people use templates that users place when voting on whatnot to declare their vote. I have created similar "templates" on one of my user pages, but currently these are not mainstream templates (then again they aren't even templates) because I wanted a few Admins to approve them for use on Votes (such as RfAs and other votes). Please see This page for more info.

Booksworm Hello? Anyone home? Vote! Vote! 17:34, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry that I uploaded this picture, I didn't knew that this is protected in copyright, please don't block me! Hjbhuvghgg 19:05, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

ArbCom voting

Pilotguy, I am the one, rightly or wrongly, who brought the issue to AN/I.

What should I have done? I don't delete people's comments, and I was fairly shocked when I saw this happen. I am way too slow to revert 37 changes, plus they wouldn't have been reverts since Cyde Weys added new stuff as he deleted old, and reverting is counter-productive anyhow. I tried to talk with him; he blew me off.

If you say I was wrong to go to AN/I, well, it is quite possible. I have never tried that before. What should I have done? Jd2718 00:17, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Can you educate me?

Can you educate me about this sort of thing?

I was not aware that people could be indef blocked for having an email address as a username. Really? I think the software should prevent it, but that hardly means that we should block people for it. --Jimbo Wales 02:15, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey Jimbo. User names containing email addresses are blocked as a precaution against search engine results, which lead to harvesting by spam bots. I block such user names allowing account creation, and request that they email me to confirm that they do own it (see example). Once confirmed, I unblock and explain the problems they may encounter. If you're concerned about process, these were discouraged by the Username policy (search "e-mail addresses") until the software blocked the '@' character.
However, I think the fact that the user was previously warned for spam, vandalism, and abuse leads one to assume less good faith in blocking them. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

User:Lazylaces

OK, I sometimes make mistakes (and it was only a 24-hour block)-looks as if someone's unblocked anyway - sorry, jimfbleak 06:23, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

username policies and unblocking request

My account was blocked because 'it contained an email address'. I asked for it to be unblocked and you denied it. The official blocking policy that you referenced clearly states that existing accounts that had email addresses are NOT to be blocked. As such, I feel your ruling was not fair nor appropriate. The good thing is that you showed me another tag that I can use to rename my account while blocked. I will use this format, but it looks like the process is that the account will be unblocked for a period of 24 hours. It is a little frustrating that I was very clear in my request that I was requesting my account be unblocked so that I could rename it. The experience is very frustrating, especially since my account was blocked for having an email address prior to there being an official policy of not allowing an email address. Please give a little more thought to unblocking requests in the future.

From username policy: "E-mail addresses: As of September 26, 2006, the MediaWiki software has been changed so the users may no longer register usernames with "@" in them. Previously, these usernames were discouraged. Preventing the usage of @ stops editors from receiving spam, reduces work for administrators and prevents hurt feelings due to being blocked, which may have led editors to simply leave in the past. Existing usernames with the sign are not blocked, but editors should be encouraged to change their names as the sign interferes with some MediaWiki functions."

Thanks. shan_mcarthur@spamcop.net (talk contribs logs)

My account was eventually unblocked so that I could rename it - I don't know if I have you to thank for that, but if it was you, thanks. ShanM (talk contribs logs)

Re: Your ISP block

Argh. Sorry I wasn't able to respond to your message sooner -- everything from holiday retail to final projects and exams at school are getting in the way, this week. There was a very serious trolling problem, including death and rape threats to users and their family members. Checkuser and IRC were involved; there was talk of police reports, as well. Before sprotecting a swath of pages, I thought I should try a short rangeblock; that didn't do the trick, so I thought I might try a longer one -- in retrospect, I should have advertised this decision more openly, should have done more to seek consensus as to the appropriate action, and should have made sure that I personally would be available to deal with the collateral damage I caused. For what it's worth, I'd like to think I learned a few lessons from this; it was at a different level than the problems I've dealt with, in the past, so hopefully I'll be prepared to respond more appropriately in the future. Let me know if there's anything more I can do, to help settle this. Luna Santin 01:15, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey, I just created a Wiki account and I was curious about what I can do to help the site be a better user expirience for everyone. It was a little confusing at first but I was just wondering if you could give me a little info on what I can do to help on Wiki. I would appreciate any information at all that you can give me. Denton High School

I was recently browsing through articles related to Denton, Texas, my hometown, and I saw that their wasn't an article for Denton High School. I'm currently in my freshman year at DHS and I'm seriously thinking about starting a project to create a page for Denton High School. Any pointers you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again,

Do you have an o-line? i.e. can it oper?

The "normal" thing here is not updating your config properly. In Config/IRCConsole.conf are a couple of lines like:

password=password
operpassword=password

If you don't have an o-line you should comment out the second of these.

#operpassword=

That way it won't try and oper each time it connects. --pgk 07:13, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Is Earthlink always static?

I saw your edit to User talk:207.69.137.36 removing the shared IP tag with the edit summary of "Earthlink is static". I'm not so sure of that. My impression is that there are 6 ways an Earthlink customer can access the Internet:

  • cable modem -- Earthlink has a few agreements with cable operators --likely will be static
  • DSL -- likely will be static
  • dial-up modem -- I suspect this may vary within a range of IP addresses
  • toll-free dial-up modem -- could be anyone
  • broadband over power lines -- a few trials underway; we should see very little of this
  • wireless -- I don't know much about this, but I imagine they'd be shared

Again, this is purely my impression.

I came to this page as part of Wikiproject Spam because the person added a somewhat spammy link yet I could find no evidence the person had ever spammed elsewhere. (Usually spam like that is "campaign-spammed").

Anyway, this is not a big issue, but I thought I would raise the question as much out of curiosity as anything else. --A. B. (talk) 19:01, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

OK then fucker, why don't you do something constructive?

Rather than just randomly insulting people, why don't you do something constructive? An admin had a page removed for no particular reason. Nobody agreed with his decision, he just deleted it for his own purpose. He never bothered to try improving it, he just deleted it. How do I reinstate the page? 82.24.158.222 23:06, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

"Constructive manner"? I am being constructive, you on the other hand are being evasive.

How do I reinstate the page?

Hi

Hi, Pilotguy. I figured now is a good time to be serious for a moment and offer an explanation. I'm one of the guys that occasionally creates strange usernames(not always directed at anyone in particular). I do it to let out a little creative steam, if you will. I actually do make serious contributions, but since "technically" I'm being disruptive with these sock puppets, I don't wish to tell you under what username.

Lately, I've been seeing more attack type names that mention you and I just wanted to say that they're not me making them. What I mean by "attack" is names that get personal and call you a "f---ing bastard" (the name that inspired me to write this) and the like.

I seen a post on your talk page a while back referring to some old usernames such as User:Pilotguy, Do You Like Airplanes? Or Am I Just Stupid? and the poster asked "What did you do to this guy!?" Answer: nothing. And I'm sorry if you interpreted it as an attack. That wasn't my intention. I'm not mean spirited! Also, I'm not Dicky Roberts(as I've been accused of elsewhere) or any of those other guys that take things way too far. Sometimes, it's just fun to get a reaction.

Some might call it "feeding the trolls", but I admire your attitude!A Non O Miss 23:12, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Not again

Now your policy states that you would like me to add information that is good for Mt. Tabor. So what is the problem with me adding factual information to the Mt.Tabor page. I go there and I think that I might know a little more that is going on with the school than you do. This is real stuff and it is happening at Mt. Tabor. I dont edit the key club stuff. I edit what I know and that is Mt. Tabor football. You are like a dictator and you dont even know what you are talking about. I didnt say Tabor sucks or anything. I gave factual info on what is going on at Tabor and it is correct. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.76.199.201 (talk) 01:44, 20 December 2006 (UTC).

misunderstanding

so you are now saying that I have to get my facts from a website. Newsflash there are not many websites about Mt. Tabor athletics. This is far from nonsense. Nonsense is talking trash about a school or something. Students at Tabor want an easy way to be given info about the most popular sport their which is football. This is a way to get it across without using nonsense or anything. I do belive that you are wrong about what is nonsense. Maybe your school does not have a solid base that wants to see what is going on with the football team. Everytime I look at the Tabor page it says the same thing and there are no specifics. People want a change. Tabor doesnt stay the same all year it changes. Im not going to add to the page everyday just when drastic changes occur. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.76.199.201 (talk) 03:34, 20 December 2006 (UTC).

Your turn to answer

let me ask you a ? buddy has anyone complained about gossip being in the tabor article? 71.76.199.201 22:42, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

Come on

So now you have made it so the public can not change the Tabor page. You have now made Mt.Tabor information not available to the public and the students. You have yet to answer my question about if anyone had given you any complaints. That is simply because they havent. You have a problem with people who edit things that will make an immediate change and I have no idea why. You are a horrible administrator. The students at Tabor liked my changes for your info and unless you are willing to put something new about sports in there at least once a week I will file a formal complaint to Wikipedia. This is senseless. You are the one putting nonsense in the article because there is nothing in there. That is the most generic thing in the world. For your info the Mt. Tabor article SUCKS and needs new material because it is bland. Thank you for taking away the oppurtunity for Tabor students to read new information which they would otherwise not know. Im glad to see you are in the christmas spirit buddy. GOD BLESS YOU.

That shows how much you know

It has gotten plenty of talk around Tabor. But you wouldnt know that would you. BECAUSE YOU DONT GO THERE AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE STUDENTS WANT.

Hi - you are removing a picture I put on page Andrew_Coburn because of invalid licence. I'm not sure what I have to choose... it is a privately taken photo, I have permission from the person who took the photo to put it on wikipedia to illustrate this article - I obviously just picked the wrong option. Sorry, I haven't uploaded pictures before. Can you tell me what licence setting I need, please? Thanks Anne Rooney 21:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Anne.rooney

Sandbox deletion

What the hell? I did not request to have my sandbox deleted, and am not leaving Wikipedia. Check the deletion log if you will, and please restore it. Who said I was leaving Wikipedia, anyways? Can you restore all of it, just so I can see who put the db notice there? Fredil 21:58, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I concluded that too. Samir restored it, it's okay :D Fredil 03:27, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

improper license? I took the pictures and composed the file myself... how about before deleting and pissing people off you check with the person and possibly help. after all this is the only way to truly solve problems... knowledge is power.

Non-Latin Username Blocks

There is some dispute as to whether these blocks are supported. There are many active editors who do just fine contributing with non-latin names. Per the discussion here, there seems be support for reccomending for to people creating a username at en.WP to not use non-latin characters. But does not appear to be consensus for blocking people on sight who already have a non-latin account at another Wikimedia wiki. Will you please start taking these non-latin username through Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names in order to better gather opions on the mattter? Thank you for your atttention to this matter.--Birgitte§β ʈ Talk 19:36, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
