[edit] Formation of Pilgrim's Rest, the town.

Man named Alex Patterson discovered first alluvial gold in 1873. in 1875 Pilgrim's Rest was declared a public gold digging area. The Transvaal Gold Mining Estates Ltd. mining company showed great interest in the area, and purchased mining rights through David Benjamin (year unknown). By 1940 mining had basically ceased, and the last gold mine was closed in 1971. The entire town was purchased by the provincial government in 1974, and proclaimed a National Monument in 1986.
