Pikermi (Greek, Modern: Πικέρμι, Ancient/Katharevousa: Πικέρμιον) is a community of the Greek prefecture of Attica. Pikermi is linked with Marathonos Avenue (GR-54). The area around Pikermi are surrounded by pristine pine forests eastward and farmlands to the east and elsewhere. The mountains cover the northern part with grasslands and housing developments filled with luxurious houses northward. The seat of government is in the town of Pikérmi (pop. 1,168 in 2001), the second-largest town in the community. Pikermi is located about 19 km east of Athens, N of the Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport as well as Spata, E of the Attiki Odos (numbers 6 and 61) and a few kilometres east of Rafina. Pikermi is also the eastermost area that uses the area code (030)-210.

Businesses are the most popular industry in Pikermi, the population in the 1990s shifted from rural to urban as suburban housing boomed in Pikermi. The forest fires of 1995 ravaged parts of Pikermi, the 2005 fires damaged a part of its forest.

Pikermi features a paleontological site which has more than forty mammal species from the late Miocene (8 million years ago). What is special about Pikermi is that it is one of the first localities to be discovered. It was discovered in 1839 by Bavarian solders of king Otto. Since it was one of the first localities, many of the species named there are type species. Similar fossils are found on Samos Island in Greece and Shanxi China.

The largest town in the community is Ntráfi (pop. 1,415). Other settlements are Dióni (pop. 227), Dasamári (109), and Palaiós Mýlos (12).

[edit] Other

Pikermi has a school, a lyceum or a middle school, a gymnasia or high school, banks, churches, a post office and a few squares (plateies).
