Pignolata is a Sicilian pastry, and is also common in Calabria. It is soft pastry, and covered in chocolate and lemon flavored syrup/icing. This pastry will have half covered or iced in one flavoring and the other half in the other flavor, which hardens when the pignolata is ready to be served. Each pastry serves several people, and is meant to be cut into small pieces when served.
Also known as pignolata, is struffoli: this is a Neapolitan dish made of deep fried balls of dough about the size of marbles. Struffoli are made from a yeast recipe and are crunchy on the outside and light inside. They are traditionally served with honey with bits of orange rind and chopped nuts. They grace the table at Christmas and Easter and are best served warm.
