Pieter van Lint

Pieter van Lint (1609—1690) was a Flemish Baroque painter, active in Antwerp and Italy, who painted both religious subjects and genre scenes.
He was born at Antwerp. After studying under Artus Wolffort, Van Lint become a master in the Guild of St. Luke in 1633. In that same year he traveled to Rome where he remained until 1640. While there he worked for Cardinal Domenico Ginnasio, Bishop of Ostia, who employed him to decorate the cathedral in that city. Van Lint also frescoed the Cibo family chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo with the Legend of the True Cross. In addition to religious commissions, the artist painted numerous small genre scenes in the style of the Bamboccianti.
Van Lint's paintings after returning to Antwerp—where he remained for the rest of his career— demonstrate a classicist style influenced by his Roman stay. Many of his later works were religious paintings, such as the Marriage of the Virgin (1640) in Antwerp Cathedral. Besides larger paintings, his small-scale devotional paintings also found a market in Spain and Spanish colonies in America. Students include Pieter IJkens and Godfried Maes.
