Pierre Celis

Pierre Celis is a Belgian brewer who opened his first brewery in 1966 to revive the witbier style in his hometown of Hoegaarden.

[edit] Becoming a brewer

After lamenting the decline of beermaking in his hometown in 1965, he decided to start making beer. His first batch of Hoegaarden beer was made on March 19, 1966 and he opened Brouwerij Celis (Celis Brewery), which would later become Brouwerij de Kluis. He also founded the Celis Brewery in the USA, which was managed by his daughter Christine.

Pierre was born on March 21, 1925 in his family home at the edge of the Hoegaarden townsquare. He grew up working in his father's dairy business, but also helped out in the neighbouring Tomsin brewery.
