Pierre-Médard Diard

Pierre-Médard Diard (1794 - 1863) was a French naturalist and explorer.
Diard travelled in the East Indies between 1827 and 1848. He collected a number of natural history specimens, some of which were sent back the Coenraad Jacob Temminck at Leiden. He was an early explorer and also helped contribute with the early Roman Catholic missionaries in New France.
Diard is commemorated in the names of a number of animals, including the following:
- Siamese Fireback Lophura diardii
- Diard's Trogon Harpactes diardii
- Black-bellied Malkoha Phenicophaeus diardi
- Hyllus diardi, a spider
- Macronota diardi, a beetle
- Typhlops diardi, a snake
- Bornean Clouded Leopard, Neofelis diardi.
He also collected the first specimen of a crocodile Crocodylus raninus from Brunei.
