When Monica tried to break off her affair with Pierce he became angry and did not want to let her go. Monica feared for her life and for Alan's. Pierce threatened to hurt Alan in an attempt to get Monica back. When that didn't work he sued her for sexual harassment. The Quartermaines were embarrassed when Monica's sex life became public. Alexis Davis approached them about the case. Even though she was a Cassadine, they accepted her offer. Monica's nephew Ned Ashton was put on the stand and was forced to confess to the affair that he had with Monica years before. This devastated the family. Emily Quartermaine, her daughter, turned to drugs. Her son A.J. turned to alcohol. Alan became addicted to pain pills.

When Sonny was getting close to uncovering the truth behind his overdose, Pierce killed Marilyn. Pierce had his past lover, Rebecca Chase, lie on the stand and say that she overheard Monica telling Pierce that he would lose his job if he did not sleep with her. Monica was found guilty of sexual harassment.

Jason Morgan and Sonny Corinthos began looking into drugs being brought to Port Charles. The police thought that Jasper Jacks was responsible for them. Sonny and Jason did not think he was to blame. Jason stopped Monica from killing Pierce. Mac arrested Pierce but he was released when the mayor did not agree with Mac's tactics. Mac was also fired. Pierce still had more revenge up his sleeve. He stole Emily's diary and started to release information to the press.

Pierce told the press that AJ was responsible for the accident that had caused Jason's brain damage. Emily felt responsible for everything. Emily fell down the stairs at the Quartermaine mansion. The entire Quartermaine family was at the hospital by Emily's side. Sonny, Brenda Barrett, and Jason were at the hospital as well. Everyone there knew about Pierce's involvement in Emily's drug problem. When the power went out in the hospital everyone including Emily were looking for Pierce. Pierce had gone to the morgue to retrieve some drugs he had stored there. He was stabbed with a scalpel in the morgue.
