Pier Art Gallery

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pier Art Gallery in Stromness, Orkney, was opened to the public in 1979. Margaret Gardiner 1904-2005 first visited the Orkneys in the 1950s and converted the old quay-side building to house her collection of modern paintings and sculpture . It began as a personal collection of her friends' work and as she has said, she did not think of herself as a collector: the sculpture and paintings of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo formed the original works.

The permanent collection now includes paintings by Patrick Heron, William Scott, William Gear, Alfred Wallace and many other internationally regarded artists. At present the Gallery is closed for reconstruction and will re-open in 2007.
