Piddington, Northamptonshire

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piddington is a village in South Northamptonshire about 6 miles south east of Northampton, a town centre on the Northampton to Newport Pagnell A509 road. It is a fairly small sized village, consisting of approximately 300 houses, a church, a "pocket park", an egg farm and The Spread Eagle pub. It is part of the Hackleton parish which has a population of 2,045 (2001) and contains 797 households. However, this parish covers a large area outside Piddington so it is highly difficult to estimate the population of Piddington, it is estimated as less than Hackleton. It is also the site of the Piddington Roman Villa, which Hackleton owns.

[edit] History

Despite being little known to anyone who does not know the area well, Piddington was once an incredibly important establishment. During Roman times, one of the most important roads in the country that was used to transport troops from one end of the country to the other ran through the village. Furthermore, up until recently it has been a far less established and smaller civilistaion then the nearby village of Hackleton.

There had used to be a village shop located on Forest Road(the main road running through the village) which shut down in the 80s due to new ownership. Before the erection of the shop in hackleton it was the local shop for inhabitants of both villages

There is also what is believed to be a former fueling station and car garage located next to the dwelling of 23 Forest Road. There is a fuel tank on the drive of the neighbouring dwelling and an outlet pipe which all points to it being a former fuelling station, however little knowledge is known about this.

The church in the village was erected in the 17th century along with the spire and bell tower, all of which still stands today. The "pocket park" was formerly a privately owned field with livestock in. However when the owner of this field died he left it to the village in his will and the local council decided to turn it into a pocket park.
