The Woolworth Building in New York City is considered to be the world's first skyscraper. It was constructed in 1913 and was the world's tallest building for seventeen years and today remains one of the fifty tallest buildings in the United States. The building was owned by the F.W. Woolworth Company for 85 years until it was sold in 1998. Most of the ornate lobby, previously a tourist attraction, was restricted to those with business in the building after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Photo credit: Pictorial News Co. |
