Pickard is an unincorporated town in Sugar Creek Township, Clinton County, Indiana. The town is named for Joseph Pickard who operated a sawmill at the site.[3]
[edit] History
Joseph Pickard originally established a sawmill at Jefferson in the western part of the county, but moved it to the new site which then came to be known as Pickard's Mill. The town also acquired the popular name of "Tailholt", and this was the name that locals requested when a post office was to be established there, but the postal authorities kept the name as Pickard's Mill. A 1913 history states that many in the area believed the town to be the inspiration for James Whitcomb Riley's poem "The Little Town o' Tailholt", though the true source was the town of Tailholt (later Carrollton) in Hancock County.
James Ward laid out a town at the site in 1844, but it was never platted.[3]
